PACMAN'S VICTORY, AN INSTRUMENT FOR NATION'S UNITY By Alex A. Paglumotan, GAB Commissioner PhilBoxing.com Tue, 24 Jan 2006 Viva Manny "The Pacman" Pacquiao! The Games and Amusements Board now joins the millions of Filipinos worldwide in full jubilation for the triumphant winning of our very own and beloved Manny Pacquiao for knocking down to the canvass the Mexican Erik "El Terrible" Morales in their second encounter dubbed as "The Battle " at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada yesterday morning here in the Philippines. We can expect the euphoric effect and victorious adulation brought about by the proven solid combinations and unprecedented speed displayed by the Pacman in knocking down El Terrible at exactly 2 minutes and 33 seconds in the 10th round of their scheduled 12 rounds sensational WBC International Super Featherweight Championship match. I couldn't help myself, but join the millions of Filipinos in this very historic occassion. I must admit, I was also in tears when I saw Manny excellently connecting with super and terrible combinations of punches right through the face and body of Morales. The Mexican fighter, known as the world's best, succumbed to the fighting strategy of Manny until he had completely given up the fight. What is inspiring here is not necessarily that the win turned into a fiesta royale among almost all classes of the Philippine society, but the Pacman's 10th round glorious display of the Filipino's sense of courage and bravery. What prompted this writer to shed tears is the very fact that Manny himself stated that he did his best "for the country, and if necessary, for us to unite ..." It was a day for all of us Filipinos. No politics involved. Plain and simple battle to regain our country's significance and fame in the name of professional boxing. No doubt the pressence of our Filipino brothers who crossed a country, state and boarders to go to Las Vegas, plus the moral support poured out by our leaders there headed by First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, was a clear manifestation of our solidarity at that moment. I even heard Congressman Monico O. Puentevella of Bacolod City serving as a reporter for Bombo Radyo Philippines Network, and modesty aside, they got it first, fast and direct from Thomas and Mack Center with Puentevella as their top correspondent. One good thing also to note is the emotional performance of Viva recording artist Jen Bautista who sung our national anthem in red fighting gown. Her being a "lady luck" eventually turned a magical source of strength for Manny and all of us Filipinos ... GAB Chairman Eric R. Buhain called me yesterday seconds after the Pacman's victory over Morales. The good Chairman right there and then, in great excitement, said "what a great day for the Philippines, Mabuhay tayong mga Pilipino!" I could feel the emotions of Buhain since he was there waving our Philippine flag, as the big boss of the Presidential agency wherein which professional boxing is being regulated. As of this writing, our top people from Malaca?ang, on instructions by the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, are preparing for a hero's welcome for Pacman's arrival anytime this week. So, after having regained our honor and pride in the international arena of professional boxing competitions and having shown to the whole wide world our capability to be united, solid and in one common agenda, are we now in the position to achieve unity? If Manny Pacquiao is to be followed, he wants it that way. That he was able to accept all the necessary sacrifices not only for himself but for the cause of the Filipinos and the common tao, why should we ourselves are not able to do the same sacrifices in order to achieve the dreamed UNITY? Why not? Yes, as a matter of evidence, yesterday we were one and in unison. Millions of Filipinos here and from all corners of the globe were glued with high expectations hoping that the Philippine's pride, the Pacman, will make it for our country. And so if Manny is capable of being a symbol of unity among us, why coulndn't we? What's wrong with our leaders and the opposition? I am saying this without fear nor favor to anyone but only, to somehow encourage our Filipino compatriots and brothers, in simple terms, to work hand in hand for the betterment of our future generations. There is really a strength in us if we always stand united. Hoping that the charisma of Manny Pacquiao will help us to do this for the sake of our country and for future generations. Lastly, thanks for all the prayers and the moral support that had been extended to Manny Pacquiao. His victory is ours. We are always a part of it. And to Manny, a BIG SALUTE from the GAB and from the millions of Filipinos all over the world. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Alex A. Paglumotan, GAB Commissioner. |
