VARGAS EYES ARIZA TO HELP OLYMPIC HOPEFULS

PhilBoxing.com

Buoyed by the success at the recent Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in which the Philippines won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Ricky Vargas wants to tap the services of Manny Pacquiao?s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza to help prepare our boxers for the 2012 Olympic qualifying tournaments.

Vargas told the Inquirer that besides his desire to seek Ariza?s help in strengthening the chances of the Filipino boxers in their quest for slots in the London Olympics the ABAP plans to ?either send our coaches to training schools for boxing coaches overseas or bring in a coach from abroad.?

Although Vargas said they had identified an American coach but that they were ?re-thinking ? the idea even as he leaned towards ?bringing in a coaching expert to Manila for three weeks to conduct workshops for our coaches together with our boxers.?

The ABAP president disclosed that they also plan to send some boxers overseas for training and had received invitations from Mongolia and Japan among other countries. Vargas said that when he sends our boxers abroad he would ?like to make sure that when they get there our coaches learn something too.?

He said the ABAP will soon select boxers ?to prepare for the qualifiers for the Olympics? with the first tournament to be held in Kazakhstan.

Vargas said that the ABAP ?most likely will be looking at five slots? in the qualifying tournaments for men with at least one female boxer included.

The ABAP president made it clear that they have ?a young enough group that fought in the Asian Games and we will see how they perform especially Charly Suarez as we look for the best out of the pool.?

Vargas said that Suarez who was disappointingly beaten in the first round of competition at the Asian Games ?continues to be a potential boxer but he has to start all over again and prove that he can do it. Its not all potential. We need performance coupled with desire. He has to dig deep into his heart and say he wants it and must be willing to sacrifice and work hard.?

Vargas said ?we may have a champion in Charly. We have hopes for him but he has to prove. Its not all hopes and we have to be very objective about it because if one of our boxers in the training pool can beat the hell out of these guys, that?s a risk we take.?
