OUR BOXING HEROES
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 29 Nov 2010

Once again it was our boxing heroes who brought us the most joy and a whole lot of pride in the recently concluded Asian Games in Guangzhou, China where the Philippines won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
Clearly, the hometown advantage came into play at hosts China were gifted with the gold medal in the women's final between two-time world champion Ren Cancan who appeared to have been beaten by the Philippines' multi-titled Annie Albania who cried unabashedly when she heard the 7-5 decision in favor of the Chinese girl.
Even India's five time world champion Mary Kom who lost to Ren in tne semi finals complained about the judging which favored the hometown girl.
Flyweight Rey Saludar who squeezed through with a 13-11 victory to capture the gold medal against Chang Yong almost saw that too stolen from him when leading 10-3 going into the final round he was credited with only three points in the third and final round as against the eight of the Chinese fighter despite the fact that Saludar staggered Yong in the closing stages of the bout.
Rey's younger brother, 18 year old Victorio Saludar lost in the semi finals and settled for the bronze medal in his first Asian Games.
Eminent businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan who is Chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association will turn over thec ash incentives he promised the boxers who won medals at the Asian Games at a special session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Dragon Gate restaurant on Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
While the judging in Guangzhou was nowhere near as atrocious as it was during the days of the late Prof. Anwar Chowdhry who was president of the International Amateur Boxing Association, there were still instances of poor officiating even under the new president Dr.Ching Kuo Wu of Chinese-Taipei.
