MELLIGEN READY FOR ANOTHER MAIN EVENT IN RENO By Rod Mijares PhilBoxing.com Thu, 01 Jul 2010 ![]() The pride of Cebu City?s ALA Gym Mighty Mark Melligen from Bacolod City, Philippines will see action on July 3, 2010 at the Grand Sierra Resort, Reno, Nevada in the main event against Anges Adjaho in the welterweight division. Adjaho is from Benin, a country in West Africa, but he is fighting out of Geneva, New York. The fight will be Melligen?s 8th fight since he began his successful career under Top Rank Promotions with only 1 loss in his American campaign but with a total of 2 losses in his career. Likewise for Adjaho who will also be fighting in his 8th fight on American soil but with 2 losses since migrating to America. However, Adjaho?s two losses were eliminator bouts which shows he is a capable, equally skillful and dangerous boxer with almost 52% chances of knocking out his opponent after garnering a record of 25 wins (14KO) with 2 losses (1KO) and no draw. His first loss in America was on October 13, 2007 for the WBA Super Featherweight title eliminator against Venezuelan Miguel Acosta who is now the current WBA world lightweight champion. His other loss was on his last fight on July 11, 2009 against Antonio Demarco for the WBC Lightweight title eliminator. Demarco was the interim WBC lightweight champion before losing to the late Edwin Valero for the WBC world lightweight title. Melligen on the other hand has a better record with a 65% chance of knocking out his opponent with 18 wins (13KO), 2 losses (1KO) and no draw. Fighting Adjaho is like fighting in an eliminator bout and will bring the best of Melligen. To make a remarkable statement as claimed by his trainer, Tony Martin, Melligen should win convincingly and finish Adjaho in the early rounds. Tony Martin believes that a win against Adjaho will open the door for a much bigger fight that Melligen deserves. Also, Top Rank Promotions thought that the 24-year old Melligen will even give the current WBC welterweight undefeated champion, Andre Berto (26 wins, 20KO), a run for his money. Melligen who has been training hard since arriving in America on Father?s day, June 20, 2010 was supposed to fight for redemption against Mexican Michel Rosales who defeated him on a split decision on that fateful night of November 13, 2009 at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay Casino. That same night his friend and co-stable in ALA Gym, Z Gorres won but collapsed in the ring and eventually had brain surgery to save his life. There was no doubt that Melligen was not 100% mentally ready when he fought Rosales and a fight with him on the 3rd of July could have been a redemption worth paying for as Rosales will be facing a different and very determined Melligen this time around. However, for unknown reason, Rosales backed out less than two weeks into the upcoming fight. Melligen?s camp attributed this to nothing else but Rosales? fear of losing. Rosales won his last 3 fights in Mexico against unheralded opponents while Melligen fought and succumbed into submission dangerous boxers. After a series of sparring sessions against bigger opponents at Mayweather gym in Las Vegas, Melligen mellowed down and concluded his training Wednesday. Team Melligen will fly to Reno on Thursday at around 10:30 via Southwest Airlines in the morning and will arrive at 11:45 a.m. just in time for the 2:00 p.m. press conference on the same day. Weigh-in will be on Friday, July 3, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. It is expected that Filipinos from Reno, Nevada and Northern California will drive in full force to show their support to their charismatic and talented countryman, Mark Jason Melligen, who has the making of the next Manny Pacquiao. To be a Pacquiao, Melligen should fight like Pacquiao and to be Melligen, he should defend like Melligen. Other boxers that will see action in the boxing event in Reno on July 3 promoted by Top Rank Promotions are light flyweight Mexican Ulises Solis against fellow Mexican Eric Ortiz as co-main event of the night. Americans Joey Gilbert and Billy Bailey will fight against each other in the super middleweight class and Carlos Gaytan from Reno, Nevada will square off against Alex Rivera from California in the light heavyweight class.
