MELLIGEN ON TRACK, BEAT THE SCALE TONIGHT By Rod Mijares PhilBoxing.com Sat, 10 Apr 2010 ![]() Team Melligen worked so hard for the April 10, 2010 ?Battle at the Hard Rock? that aside from the rigorous training and sparring sessions that Melligen has to undergo prior to the bout, they also have to ensure that he meets the required weight of 147 lbs come weigh-in time on April 9, 2010 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. They were making sure that Melligen would eat the right kind of food and poured himself the right kind of drink to keep the event meaningful and exciting. Besides, he is only the main event opposite Mexican Norberto Gonzalez. What more there is to say than do what is expected of him. Two hours before the fight I asked one member of the team what is the weight of Melligen and he replied 146 pounds which was a good sign prior to the actual weigh-in. Came the weigh-in and almost everybody was holding their breath. It was well-attended by the media from all over America including our very own ABS-CBN Las Vegas based correspondent Bev LLorente, her crew and a large turnout from the boxing fans. Melligen stood so confident and passed the weigh-in with flying colors. He beat the scale at 146 lbs. while his Mexican opponent, Norberto Gonzalez was even at 147 pounds. Melligen sacrificed so much in foods and drinks without foregoing endurance. Melligen who used to cheat on soda has totally ignore it in favor of the natural flavor of water. The lure of Las Vegas buffet with good and delicious food was no much to his desire to excel in his line of work and with all the incentives that go along with it. Besides, like his idol Manny Pacquiao, he is fighting for his country, the Philipppines. Tony Martin, his boxing coach and trainer was there all the way from day one. ?Melligen changed a lot. It?s always a good thing to look back at his lost to Rosales. Especially, I saw a great similarity with Rosales and Gonzalez. Gonzalez like Rosales has good physical attributes and they are both Mexican fighters always trying to go forward and carry the fight. However, Gonzalez will be in for a surprise,? Martin said. Melligen vindicated himself and bounced back. Three months after his lost to Rosales, the transformed Melligen came out on the offensive, throwing more punches and was more motivated. He made short work of the undefeated American Raymond Gatica and trounced him in the 6th round for a TKO win. It is this same strategy with a lot more that he will employ against Gonzalez according to Team Melligen. ?I will make this fight more entertaining and exciting. I will surely go for a win and will win it convincingly,? Melligen said as a matter of fact. ?Battle at The Hard Rock? at the Joint of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 10, 2010 is a 9-bout boxing event promoted by Top Rank Promotions. The first bout will commence at around 5:30 p.m. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rod Mijares. ![]() |
