China Open: Suarez defeats Syrian foe PhilBoxing.com Tue, 06 Apr 2010 ![]() FEATHERWEIGHT Charly Suarez finally notched the country?s first victory inside the ring as he hammered out a 9-5 win over Chaman Weesap of Syria in their first round face-off of the ongoing China Open Tuesday in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China. The 22-year-old Suarez had a strong start as he stalked and caught a backtracking Weesap with crisp combinations. The Davao-native boxer scored a standing-eight count towards the end of the first round and finished the opening canto with a 4-1 lead. Weesap then changed tactics by the third and closed the gap as the Syrian became more aggressive to end the third round with the Filipino slightly ahead, 7-5. Suarez, last year?s Laos SEA Games gold winner and a veteran of back-to-back world championship tournaments in Chicago and Milan, used his ring generalship to dominate the final round and eventually win match. ?Malakas din yung kalaban pero akala ko babagsak na sa last round kasi nung tinamaan ko ng combination nayanig din,? said Suarez moments after the victory that assures him of a quarterfinal stint. In the drawing of lots Monday morning light flyweight Gerson Nietes took a bye and assured the country of at least a bronze medal. Nietes will trade leathers with Idyaz Sulay-Minov of Kazakhstan in their semifinal encounter this Friday. Suarez? win softened the impact of the twin losses suffered by lightweight Jameboy Vicera and lightwelteweight Mark John Melligen who are part of the seven-man RP boxing team backed by PLDT and Smart Communications headed by its top honcho and Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan. Vicera bowed to to Farkany Radouane of France via 10-2 score while Melligen absorbed an 11-1 beating at the hands of Huricha Bilige of China both on opening night. ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson exuded confidence in achieving their main mission as four more bets are set to see action within the week in this AIBA-ranking event participated in by traditional boxing powerhouses from around the globe including Cuba and Russia. ?Naturally we?re disappointed (with the losses) but that is precisely why we?re here - to gauge our strengths and pinpoint our weaknesses,? said Picson from China. ?What?s important is our boxers are constantly honed and exposed to quality competition.? Today bantamweight Francis Palicte faces Hongkong?s Cho Cheng Yu while Flyweight Rey Saludar will take on one of the top fighters of this tournament in 2008 Olympic gold medalist Zou Shimming of China in their own first round meet on Thursday. Also on Thursday welterweight Wilfredo Lopez will lock horns with Mutaz Don Duk of Jordan. ABAP President Ricky Vargas and secretary-general Patrick Gregorio are scheduled to arrive Thursday night in China to personally assess the young fighters? progress and readiness to compete in several more international tournaments lined-up by the country?s amateur boxing body. Also lending crucial support are the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) whose chairman Harry Angping is expected to be on hand to witness the other bouts on Thursday. ![]() |
