 Marnelle Verano.
FILIPINA professional boxer Marnelle Verano of Valencia, Bukidnon will be fighting for the Orient-Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) title in the 112-pound division on June 12 in Tokyo, Japan.
Her opponent has not yet been confirmed but the title is reportedly vacant.
Verano, 23, has a ring record of four wins, one draw and one loss. Her only loss was from the hands of Japanese Naoko Yamaguchi last October 13 in Japan.
“Gi-stop na lang bigla sa referee among away,” said Verano, who graced the Araw ng Dabaw Amateur Boxing Tournament held Sunday near the City Hall.
Verano also saw action in last year’s Araw ng Dabaw by knocking out local favorite Cheraly Dalit of the Vic J. Adriano Stable in 1:10 of the first round last March 25. She also beat Teraform Panimit of Thailand via unanimous decision in Palawan last September 13, 2009.
She turned pro in 2007 and first won against Baby Tecoc in Sampaloc via unanimous decision. Verano then outpointed Tecoc’s neice in her next outing.
Verano, who is managed by Australian Terence Mogg in Manila, accompanied the Bukidnon boxing team in Davao mentored by her elder brother Jared.
Buy she is planning to go to Baguio City to train under her other elder brother and former pro boxer Jun Rey, who is now a trainer.
“Mas mabuti kasi doon meron akong makaka-sparring kahit lalake. Dito kasi sa Bukidnon wala eh, puro amateurs,” she said.
Verano was also formerly trained by her other brother and former pro boxer Jake, who is now a trainer in Japan. Her two brothers were formerly under the stable of Leonel Lazarito in Bukidnon.
“Kulang pa talaga ang preparasyon ko ngayon,” said Verano, a former member of the Bukidnon amateur boxing team.
Marnelle is the youngest and the only daughter among the four children of farmer Julie and housewife Marissa Verano.
Marnelle’s twin cousins Wenie Cline and Wenie Clide saw action in Davao City.
Wenie Cline, however, only played an exhibition after her opponent did not showed up, while her twin brother Wenie Clide fought in the 46-kilogram division.
