Even The Best Needs Our Prayers By Atty. Dan Neri Lim PhilBoxing.com Sun, 14 Mar 2010 Once again, our very own Manny Pacquiao goes to battle armed with the power in his fists and the skills that he has honed to perfection in the rigorous trainings that he imposed on himself. Once again, he carries on his shoulders the aspirations and hopes of his people who look up to him as a source of inspiration, pride and joy in these very difficult times. We all know of course that Joshua Clottey has other things in mind. He is not in there to accommodate Manny. In fact, he is there for the exact opposite which is to spoil Manny’s expected grand celebration. He is expected to seize every opportunity and grab any opening to accomplish what those who fell before him failed to do. Notwithstanding his greatness, Manny does not expect to be given royal treatment by Clottey. Like most things that he accomplished in life, Manny knows he will have to do it the hard way. It means that he will have to give Clottey his best shot because that is the only way to do it. When he steps into the ring, Manny will be all by himself. All the accolades he has received, all the belts he has won, not even the boxing history he made will mean anything. It will be each man to himself and all that matters to Clottey is to nail Manny. Clottey has nothing to lose and everything to gain so he can play loose and relaxed. That is the most dangerous fighter any boxer can face. It is in this context that the Filipino people must once again come together in prayer. We need to rally unconditionally behind the one man who has given us so much, our dignity, our identity and our honor as a nation. We need to pray that Manny will hurdle this test without any harm to him physically, mentally and emotionally. We need to pray for his complete deliverance not just for his own good but also for all those who continue to look up to him. With due apologies to Joshua Clottey, I believe that this is only a curtain raiser to a bigger fight that Manny would be fighting in a couple of months. This is his stake to the honor of representing the people of Sarangani in Congress. We may not be unanimous in our appreciation for Manny’s decision to go into public service but at the very least let us unite in allowing him the privilege to exercise his right to do so. His electoral plans may or may not put an end to his boxing career. Most of us hope that it won’t. Whatever his eventual decision, we know that Manny has given the Filipino much more than most of us can give in many lifetimes. His place is secure not only in history but also in our hearts. If only for this reason I reiterate the call of our people to offer our prayers for Manny Pacquiao. We know that he is the best. But even the best needs our prayers.
