The Curious Case of Marvin Sonsona’s Title Defense By Rob Cruz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 14 Nov 2009 Back in September 4 in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, Marvin Sonsona won the WBO super flyweight world title in dramatic fashion by going the distance and earning a unanimous decision over veteran Jose “Carita“ Lopez. Eight days from now, one of the youngest world champions returns to the place where he won his first world title belt. As Pacmaina runs wild with boxing fans in Canada right now, the timing couldn’t be better to share the glory and have our own Marvelousmania, as Marvin Sonsona is guaranteed to deliver his own firepower in the ring. When: Rumble at Rama X, Saturday, November 21, exactly one week after the big Las Vegas clash,. Live Broadcast can be seen on TSN across the county and it will also broadcast in Mexico and in Philippines. Rumble at Rama X has been advertised in a full page layout with at least five Toronto Filipino Community Newspapers. Marvin has been front page news with some of the Filipino Newspapers available in circulation within Ontario. This venue is promoted by Orion Sports Management and starts at 8 p.m. the main event is scheduled at 10:30 p.m. Where: At the Casino Rama complex, which is an hour and a half north of the Greater Toronto Region (GTA), a multicultural world class city. The GTA is home to many Filipinos and are a pronounced visible ethnic group in Toronto all the GTA municipalities which are York, Peel, Durham and Halton. It is the seventh largest metropolitan area in North America with an estimated population of 6.7 million inhabitants. Why: This is voluntary title defence against a WBO world ranked top 15 contender. This fight will keep the young champion in top condition and should he win, he will on course to his next fight which will be a mandatory title defence early next year. Who: Against the 23 year old Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez from Mexico City in the Main Event at Rumble at Rama X. He is almost he same height with practically the same reach as Marvin Sonsona, physically they are as close to being evenly matched. Alejandro is a savvy counter puncher that is known to administer good combos complemented by his ability to incorporate good punching speed from both hands. He is a patient but an opportunistic boxer who hasn‘t been stopped by a KO. He waits for the right moment to strike with his counter attacks. Alejandro is known to back peddle to draw his opponent in, while he backs himself against the ropes waiting to counter punch his way to get inside to land his effective combos. Appearing in an undercard fight will be Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales, who is ranked sixth in the WBO Junior Featherweight division. He is not yet known to the fans here, however, his fights in the Philippines have been known to have dramatic endings. Steve “the Canadian Kid” Molitor will also appear in an undercard match in his quest to acquire the IBF Junior Featherweight belt he once held. What: All the boxers coming from warmer climates will need to adjust to the cold autumn weather up here with regards to the thinner air in higher altitudes, making training more complex. Temperatures can vary beyond 15 degrees Celsius within a 24 hour cycle. They will condition themselves within a weeks time to cut weight for a same day weigh in. Expect that the evenly sized undefeated knockout specialist Marvin Sonsona (14W-0L, 12KO) and the counter punching Alejandro Hernandez (22W-7L,-1D, 11KO) boxing styles will mesh and complement each other once they face each other in the ring. Marvin has proven that he has a high KO percentage due to his forward momentum power punching abilities but has only gone the distance once when he won the world title. Alejandro has been in 30 fights with six of them going the full distance. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rob Cruz. |
