PACQUIAO DOES NOT NEED TO FIGHT MAYWEATHER FOR ANYONE, NOT FOR BOXING OR THE FANS

PhilBoxing.com

After Floyd Mayweather’s expected but less than spectacular win over a blown-out legitimate super featherweight Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand several days ago, people have been salivating at the prospect of seeing Manny Pacquiao go against Mayweather to place an exclamation point on the Filipino idol’s legacy in boxing.

“This is what people want to see”, someone said. “Boxing needs it to happen”, another stated.

Huh?

From this writer’s perspective, Pacquiao does not need a fight with Mayweather to further his legacy as one of the top, if not the top boxer of his generation.

He has done that already!

He has sealed his legacy with his last performances against Marquez, de la Hoya and Hatton. Those victories are enough to secure him a place at the Hall of Fame and in the minds of boxing purists even without a win over Mayweather.

Pacquiao as a boxer has nothing further to prove.

He has done it all and in the process kept his sanity and his health intact. He does not need a Mayweather fight and risk his health against an undisciplined and a weight-cheater like Mayweather.

And, in all probability, he does not need it for money either. He has enough for even three or more lifetimes.

So why would he put himself in unnecessary danger just because boxing “needs this fight to take place” and the fans are all clamoring for it?

Has he not done enough?

If Pacquiao beats Cotto as most fans would hope, then people can say what they want about a possible fight with Mayweather. They can hype it and they can shout it out to the world. They can even twist Uncle Bob’s hands to make it happen.

But from my perspective, I hope Pacquiao will not listen to any of it as there is no absolute need for it to happen. Not for boxing, not for the fans.

Regardless of what happens with the Cotto fight, after a brief rest and the Holidays, it’s best for him to take an easier fight or two perhaps even doing it in the Philippines as a farewell to his people and then retire while he is on top.

After all, he truly deserves it.

He then can pursue whatever he wishes to do, stuff like helping promote Philippine boxing and bringing it to a higher level than where it is now, or be a philanthropist ala Bill Gates to help the Filipino people fight poverty. Or he can even run for Congress.

Let Mayweather suck it up and find other guys he can cherry pick to win a fight and make his money.

Better still, fight guys in his weight class.

Pacquiao should not be a part in allowing Mayweather another chance to disrespect boxing and allow him to make tons of money while doing so.

But chances are Mayweather will directly or indirectly continue to pick on a smaller Pacquiao with the hope that he can land a fight with the Filipino idol and do a Marquez on him by coming to the ring far heavier than Pacquiao.

Some say Mayweather will never do that again, not with a fight with Pacquiao.

But there is always that possibility. He has done it once and got away with it, who knows if he won’t do it again?

After all, with what he did at the weigh-in before his fight with Marquez, Mayweather has the capacity to disrespect the promoters, his opponent, the fans and boxing as a whole again!

It would not be a surprise if some media people will be duped to help him push for a fight with Pacquiao because many in the writing profession and amongst the fans as well, want to see it thinking that “boxing needs it to happen”.

If Mayweather is really who he claims to be, the best p4p boxer in the world, he needs to prove it on top of the ring with people in his weight class. Not with guys who are two or three weight classes under him.

He should fight with Mosley, or Margarito, or Paul Williams, and even Berto. These guys are in his weight class and can fight him on an even playing field. He can’t do a weight cheat on them.

Then if he beats them all, no one can object if he goes around saying he is the best pound for pound boxer. But he can’t justify that by beating smaller guys like Marquez.

As for a Mayweather fight with the Filipino spitfire?

Regardless of who wants it to happen, it does not need to happen!

In spite of what has been said and written, Pacquiao does not need a fight with Mayweather. Not that he can’t kick the butt of the Detroit loud mouth, but what good will the fight do for the Filipino boxing icon?

Certainly a fight with Mayweather will do more good for the cherry picker than for Pacquiao. And, with what has been said and written lately, it appears Mayweather has hoodwinked many people to think the same way.

At the very best, the fight will only allow Mayweather to perpetuate his ability to scorn the sweet science and make himself look good by cherry picking opponents and fighting people who are below his weight class. Then going around saying he is the best p4p in the world.

Boxing does not need Mayweather’s antics to carry on and continually tarnish its image. And boxing fans should do their best and put a stop to such mockery. The media people must do their part too!

And certainly, Pacquiao should not be a part of such Mayweather travesty!
