SOD DEFEATS CATUBAY!
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 07 Apr 2009
BANGKOK--Thailand's Sod Loknongyangtoy retained his WBO Asia Pacific superbantam title with a unanimous decision verdict minutes ago here over a very tough Federico Catubay.
Two judges scored it 116-112, while the third judge had it 117-111 all in favor of the Thai champion, who upped his record to 41 wins, 2 losses, 18 KO's. Filipino judge Edward Ligas, who is accredited by the US-based ASsociation of Boxing Commission (ABC) as judge, was one of the three ringside judges for this fight.
Looknongyangtoy was the busier fighter all throughout, although Catubay looked strong in the latter rounds and had the defending champion clinging most of the time to avoid a late rally by the gutsy Filipino.
Despite the loss, however, Catubay made a good account of himself with a competitive showing despite the fact that he was moving up two divisions higher than his usual superflyweight division where he campaigns.
"It was a good fight. Catubay was pretty competitive all throughout, although Sod was clearly the winner," said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo who supervised the fight at ringside.
With the win, Looknongyangtoy is now a possible candidate to face the winner of the Gerry Penalosa-Juan Manuel Lopez WBO superbantam showdown on April 25 in Puerto Rico.
