ONCE AGAIN, Z GORRES

PhilBoxing.com

Z Gorres will conquer the bantamweight division and he will be fighting former International Boxing Federation mini-flyweight champion Roberto Carlos ?Mako? Leyva for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental bantamweight crown today at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.

Michael Aldeguer matches Gorres against the former world champion so that he can immediately enter the rankings of his new division should he wins.

Gorres, who will turn 27 this May, is ranked No.3 by the WBO and 11th by the World Boxing Association as a superflyweight. If Gorres keeps his rank, Aldeguer said they are looking for a rematch against Fernando Montiel, who has also moved to the bantamweight division. ?A Gorres and Montiel rematch is what the people are asking for. It?s the logical direction for now,? said Aldeguer.

Even if Gorres has not fought atop the ring for seven months since beating Kenyan Nick Otieno last May 31, he has been consistently training for this fight. ?He is very comfortable at his new weight,? said Aldeguer. ?Gorres had a problem with his stamina in the later rounds at 115 because he had to drain himself to get the weight.?

?The Dream? probably is one of the unluckiest talented fighters of the country. On February 24, 2007, Gorres got a shot for a world title where he challenged WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

During the bout, Gorres was deducted a point twice, one in the 10th and another in the 12th round, for holding his opponent. Montiel won the fight and defended the title in a dubious split decision. The decision could have gone differently if not for the controversial deductions.

Then he fought former world flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan on February 2, 2008 in an IBF title eliminator. The winner would challenge then IBF super flyweight titlist Dimitri Kirilov of Russia who would later be dethroned by Darchinyan on August 2, 2008.

The match, however, was flawed by poor officiating by the referee and bottle-throwing from the discontented audience. The bout ended in a debatable split draw. Darchinyan won the right to fight for the IBF championship because he was ranked higher than Gorres.

Gorres is prepared to face his two controversial foes once again to settle the hullabaloo surrounding his two disputed fights. But first he must chalk up an impressive win against the Mexican Leyva. Both fighters are southpaws with Gorres having a 28-2-2 with 15 KOs and Leyva sporting a record of 25-8-1 with 20 KOs.

One of Gorres' momentous victories was his 1st round KO win over Glenn Donaire, brother of the IBF superflyweight champion Nonito Donaire, on March 19, 2005. This was his first bout in the United States.

His real name is Zeta Celestino Oliveros Gorres, a combination of the names of his parents: Zeta his mother and Celestino his father.
