WBF CHAMPION KILLED IN ROAD ACCIDENT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 12 Jan 2009
Undefeated World Boxing Foundation (WBF) featherweight champion Ludumo Galada (13-0, 6 KO?s) has been killed in a road accident near East London over the weekend.
Regarded as one of South Africa ?s most talented fighter the 26 year old Galada?s manager, Siphatho Handi said the fighter was driving home from a church service in Johannesburg when his car was involved in a tragic accident.
Galada was scheduled to make the second defense of his title against the experienced Takalani Ndlovu on January 23 at the Orient Theater in East London .
Well known South African boxing writer Ron Jackson notes that the sad news comes only days after the death of Giselle Salandy, a female champion from Trinidad , who died from injuries she suffered in a crash on the outskirts of Port-of-Spain. She was 21.
Director of operations at Boxing South Africa Loyiso Mtya said Galada's death was a big blow for boxing. "He was one of the talented fighters whom we were expecting great things from."
Galada won the SA amateur bantamweight title in 2001 and represented South Africa at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester . He also represented South Africa in the 2004 Athens Olympics but lost his first bout.
Jackson reports that Galada?s career appeared to truly turn around in 2008 when he began punching with more power and stopped Themba Tshicila in the fourth round to retain his SA featherweight title for the third time.
In August 2008 he impressed in winning the vacant WBF featherweight belt when he knocked out highly rated David Kiilu of Kenya in the first round.
In the first defence of his WBF belt, on November 22, Galada once again showed impressive form with a second-round stoppage win over the capable Mexican Pedro Naverette.
