PACQUIAO: THE TAILOR FROM GENSAN By Samuel H. Cilocilo PhilBoxing.com Sat, 13 Dec 2008 ![]() Manny Pacquiao?s superb demolition job of Oscar De la Hoya last December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas before a stunned boxing world was an exquisite tapestry borne out from the crucible of poverty. Unknown to many, before Pacquiao was ushered in the pugilistic glare, he earned his keeps to help his family by working as a mason, painter and a tailor?s apprentice, sewing clothes for customers. ?Every real accomplishments first begins with a dream? said A.C.Elliot which aptly describes Pacquiao as he nurtured his dream of boxing glory while doing his sewing job in an obscure Philippine village as a teenager. Last December 6 masterful thrashing of the Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya by the tailor of GenSan is but a rapturous finale of his brilliant dream to carve a niche of boxing greatness and immortality via a spectacular fistic brilliance whose finest moment was showcased in a doubting but mesmerized boxing world. Pacquiao?s zigzagging and rapid-punching assault of Oscar de la Hoya leaving the latter a dazed and bewildered quitting stoolie is akin to the masterful touch of a tailor sewing a masterpiece tunic fitting for a royal king. The dizzying speed and fantastic footwork of Pacquiao in subduing the Golden Boy was a thing of beauty likened to a virtuoso performance by the master tailor focused on finishing a task in a splendid fashion. David Diaz congratulatory call after Pacman?s devastation of Oscar de la Hoya ? Manny, are you human? ? is reminiscent of Michael Jordan?s historic 63 point output on April 20, 1986 at the Boston Garden in the Bull?s losing effort to the Celtics in double overtime,135-131. During that momentous match ? the Great White Hope? Larry Bird remarked,? ?I think it is just God disguised as Michael Jordan?. In fact Bird himself accredit his high free throw shooting percentage in no small part to the fact that when he was a boy, he used to shoot 200 free throws before school everyday. Pacquiao?s 2,500 sit ups per day is just a piece of regimen and discipline that is part and parcel of master tailor that he is in the square ring come showtime. Last December 6 was the culmination of the dream of the tailor in his solitude. Hail to the tailor from Gensan! Click here to view a list of other articles written by Samuel H. Cilocilo. ![]() |
