MOSLEY DELIVERS A MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR HOMETOWN FANS

PhilBoxing.com

City of Carson, CA: Saturday night, during a cold foggy night at the tennis arena of the Home Depot Center, Shane Mosley, after a long absence, fought live for the first time before his hometown crowd.

Since he has not shown his wares locally for 8 years, he wanted the fight to be as memorable and entertaining as can be for his fans.

And, Shane Mosley, the local boy from nearby Pomona, delivered!

But it took him 35 minutes and 59 seconds before he finally conquered his foe, the loudmouth braggart from Nicaragua, Ricardo Mayorga.

The fight was exciting until the end, with both fighter exchanging blows all over the ring. There were a lot of ?rabbit punches? and head butts. Fortunately, there were no cuts from them.

From the eyes of the judges, the fight was very close. In fact after the fight, official copies of the judges? score cards revealed that two judges had Mosley leading, and the other had Mayorga on the driver seat.

Judge Nelson Vasquez had Mosley ahead by one point, 105-104; Judge Tony Crebs scored it 107-102 for Mosley; and Judge Pat Russel had Mayorga by 105-104. Had Mayorga last one more second before being knocked down and counted out, he would have lost just by a split decision.

Mayorga fought valiantly. However, he seems to be strong and aggressive only on the first two minutes of each round and then tends to rest and throw less during the last 60 seconds. From my point of view, it appears that is the after effect of smoking and perhaps a few beers here and there. But, I may be wrong.

Round 1 started with Mayorga rushing out and throwing a huge looping right hand. From there, he took the fight to Mosley. His punches, some of which were rabbit punches, seem to put Mosley at bay at the early rounds. But that did not last too long.

Sometime in in the middle rounds Mosley finally found his range and the fight became an all out war. Mayorga had some of his moments, landing shots that snapped Mosley head. But Mosley increasingly became more accurate as the fight progressed and a few seconds before 12 was to end, Mosley tagged Mayorga with a flurry of punches and the proud Nicaraguan, went down for a count of eight.

When he stood up, the referee asked him if he is okay as he rubbed his gloves to his shirt. Mayorga replied in the positive, thus the ref allowed the fight to continue.

Before Mayorga can even move, Mosley rushed in and threw a short left hook that landed flush on the face of Mayorga knocking him down for the full count. The end came at 2:59.

With the win, Mosley improved to 45-5-0 (38KO) while Mayorga dropped to 28-7-1 (22KO) The fight was fought in the junior middle weight class with both fighters weighing at 153 lbs during the weight-in yesterday.
