COINS AND BOTTLES FLEW TO THE RING AFTER CHAVEZ VICTORY By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 Jul 2008 Los Angeles, CA:- Tonight at Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., finally met his match. Yes, he won the fight but it was not the verdict the crowd expected or perhaps even wanted. And they showed their disapproval the old fashion way. They rain coins and plastic bottles towards Chavez as his hand was raised in victory. For Mexicans to do that to their kind, particularly to their budding hero, indicated without any doubt the verdict really stunk! Chavez was declared the winner by a split decision over a relatively unknown fighter named Matt Vanda. The scores were 97-93 (Chavez), 96-95 (Vanda) and a barely-credible, hard to believe, one sided 100-90. (Chavez) The third judge must have been one of the judges that judged the Solis- Donaire fight. He simply gave all the rounds to Mexican boxers, in this case, Chavez. Eyeglasses anyone? Chavez almost run out of gas. In fact, late in the fight, between rounds he could not even seat up straight on his stool. He was gasping for air and had to bend forward to re-oxygenate himself. Yes, it was that bad! His Dad, the legendary Julio Cesar Chaves had to go to his corner to give him a pep talk and water. He had to remind him that there were two round left and Junior must suck it up. In some ways watching Chavez get so winded and being hit so much by an unknown boxer who was supposed to kiss the canvass just like most of the others the Chavez Team handpicked for him, serves as a stark reminder that boxers must not be babied so much the way Chavez was. Because when they finally meet their match, they appear pathetic! Tonight, Junior was exactly that! The Chavez victory was not actually what Junior wanted to present to his Dad as a birthday present. He obviously wanted a knock-out. But a guy named Matt Vanda would not have any of that crap. He came to fight and almost pulled it out. Props to Vanda for a fight well fought. As for Junior, perhaps next time they will find someone less talented than Vanda. They have too otherwise Junior may end up on the losing end, if not the canvas. In fact, he almost did tonight at Hermosillo. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
