Tragedy Strikes Again: Arturo Gatti Jr., Son of Boxing Legend, Found Dead at 17 in Mexico

Arturo Gatti Jr.

The boxing world is in mourning following the shocking death of amateur boxer Arturo Gatti Jr., the 17-year-old son of late Hall of Famer Arturo "Thunder" Gatti. The young fighter was reportedly found dead in an apartment in Mexico on Tuesday, October 7, under circumstances eerily similar to his father's mysterious passing 16 years prior.

Reports from sources close to the family, including former Gatti family friend and bodyguard Chuck Zito, stated that Gatti Jr. was found hanged in the apartment where he had been residing with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues. Mexican authorities have yet to release an official report, stating that the case is still under investigation.

Gatti Jr., who was born just ten months before his father's death in 2009, was a promising amateur boxer who dreamed of carrying on his father's legacy. His longtime coach, Moe Latif, confirmed the devastating news on social media, writing: “It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone.”

Arturo Gatti Jr., was training to fight in the Golden Gloves, and others indicate he was also close to making his unofficial professional debut.

In June, there were reports of his possible debut in professional boxing, but it ultimately fell through.

Arturo Jr. had been involved in boxing since he was 6 years old when he was spotted practicing at the Ring 83 Gym near his home in Montreal, Canada.

A Troubling Parallel to His Father's Death

The tragic passing of Gatti Jr. at such a young age is deeply compounded by the lingering controversy surrounding the death of his father.

Arturo Gatti Sr., known for his fearless, action-packed style, was found dead in a resort in Brazil in 2009. Brazilian authorities initially arrested his wife, Amanda Rodrigues, for murder, but later ruled the death a suicide by hanging. That ruling has been continuously questioned by many of Gatti Sr.’s family members and friends, leading to private investigations that claimed foul play.

The boxing community is heartbroken by the loss, with many noting the haunting parallel in the circumstances of death for both father and son. Tributes have poured in for Gatti Jr., who often shared training videos online and had been training to turn professional. - With a report from Gabriel F. Cordero.
