GM Gonzales finishes second in Penang Makruk chess meet, pockets silver medal

Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia---Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales finished second in the standard event of Pre SEA Games Makruk individual chess competition to bring home the silver medal being held at the Berjaya Hotel Sunday here.

Gonzales had three wins, one draw and one loss.

He, Tin Shan Wen of Malaysia, GM Kevin Goh Wei Ming of Singapore, IM Arfan Aditya Bagus of Indonesia, GM Novendra Priasmoro of Indonesia, GM Tin Jingyao of Singapore, IM Mohamed Ervan of Indonesia and IM Jodi Setyaki Azarya of Indonesia had identical scores but the Gonzales had a better quotient.

Gonzales defeated AFM Cheng Siang Lim of Malaysia (Round 1), Lugman Nul Hakim Khairolhisal of Malaysia (Round 3) and compatriot NM Edmundo Gatus (Round 5).

He drew with IM Aditya Bagus Arfan of Indonesia (Round 4).
He lost in a winning game against GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia (Round 2).

FM Jarred Neubronner of Singapore won solo in first place with 4.0 points in five outings.

Meanwhile, IM Angelo Young yielded to Jia Qian Eng of Malaysia in the last round that resulted in the PH team finishing in fourth place.

"We are very happy with the results na nakuha ni Sir GM Jayson Gonzales ang silver medal sa individual Pre SEA Games individual Makruk chess competition. Unfortunately kinulang ng puntos sa Team event kung naipanalo ko last game ko ay Team Bronze pa sana tayo," said IM Young.

Indonesia won first place with 18.0 points followed by Singapore in second place with 17.5 points.

Malaysia took third with 13.0 points.

The Philippines (GM Jayson Gonzales, IM Angelo Young, NM Edmundo Gatus, NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and WNM Enrica Armenta) finished in fourth with 11 points.

The Filipinos Malaysia campaign is being supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by its chairman/ president Prospero Pichay and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) thru the office of Commissioner Ed Hayco.-Marlon Bernardino-
