Manila—Filipino Louie Salvador captured the title and the 3,000 Thai Baht champion’s purse at the conclusion of the Red Knight Chess Club & Cafe FIDE Rated Rapid Tournament on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the Red Knight Chess Club & Cafe in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 34-year-old Salvador, a chess teacher at Big Rook Chess Academy in Bangkok, Thailand, settled for a draw against countryman FIDE Master (FM) Jony Habla of the Philippines after 25 moves of the Italian Game in the final round of the one-day rapid chess meet organized by FIDE Master (FM) Riste Menkinoski.
The Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City native, Salvador, ended his campaign in the six-round Swiss system tournament with a total of 5.5 points, on account of five wins and one draw.
He defeated Arthicha Kijkamjai of Thailand (Round 1), Shivam Kawinvinit of Thailand (Round 2), Qixuan Shan of China (Round 3), International Master (IM) Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand (Round 4), and FIDE Master (FM) Nikolai Val Makarov of Russia (Round 5) before halving the point with FM Habla in the sixth and final round.
Habla, Adrian Othniel Yulo of the Philippines, and FIDE Master (FM) Masahiro Baba of Japan finished the tournament with similar 5.0 points, while IM Prin, Ian Hong of South Korea, and Marc Kevin Labog of the Philippines had identical 4.5 points.
It shall be recalled that Salvador won the Rooky Mini-Open 2025 Standard Open Chess Championship (FIDE rated) held last April 4 to 7, 2025, at the Forum Park Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
“I am very happy with my victory," said Salvador, a former mainstay of San Sebastian College-Recoletos during his college days under the guidance of National Master (NM) Homer Cunanan. -Marlon Bernardino-
