Japan Surpasses Mexico in Number of World Boxing Titlists; US Still Tops With 11

The United States still tops with eleven world boxing champions but Japan has surpassed Mexico in the number of world titlists with 10 against nine.

Japan added three world champions as against the loss of one entering the second quarter of the year to overtake Mexico which had Jaime Munguia and Jesse Bam Rodriguez vacating their middleweight and flyweight titles to campaign in the higher weights.

The new Japanese world titlists are Kosei Tanaka at super flyweight (WBO) Ryosuke Nishida and Yoshiki Takei both at bantamweight (WBO and IBF) The lone loser was Yudai Shigeoka who was dethroned of his IBF minimumweight crown last March 31 by Melvin Jerusalem of the Philippines.

The other Japanese world champions are: Naoya Inoue, super bantamweight (undisputed) Junto Nakatani, bantamweight (WBC) Takuma Inoue, bantamweight (WBA) Kazuto Ioka, super flyweight (WBA) Seigo Yuri Akui, flyweight (WBA) Kenshiro Teraji, light flyweight (unified WBA and WBC) and Ginjiro Shigeoka, minimuweight (WBC)

The American world champions are Jermall Charlo (middleweight), Sebastian Fundora (super welterweight), Terrence Crawford (welterweight unified), Jaron Ennis (welterweight) Devin Haney (super lightweight), Teofimo Lopez (super lightweight), Gervonta Davis (lightweight), Shakur Stevenson (lightweight), O'Shaquie Foster (super featherweight), Lamont Roach (super featherweight), and Raymond Ford (featherweight).

Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed world super middleweight champion leads the nine titlists from Mexico which also include Glberto Ramirez (cruiserweight), Isaac Cruz (super lightweight), Emanuel Navarette (super featherweight), Luis Mercado Lopez (featherweight), Rafael Espinoza (featherweight), Juan Francisco Estrada (super flyweight) and Julio Cesar Martinez (flyweight).

Puerto Rico has three namely Subriel Matias at super lightweight, Jonathan Gonzales at light flyweight and Oscar Collazo at minimumweight.
