Torre to grace Marinduque chess

ALL chess roads lead to Marinduque for the staging of the much-awaited 1st Marinduque National Chess Open.

The biggest and most prestigious chess competition in Southern Luzon this year — on March 9-10 at the Marinduque Convention Center, Capitol Compound, Boac, Marinduque.

Asia’s first GM and Hall of Famer Eugene Torre will give the inspirational remarks, along with Marinduque Gov. Presbitero Velasco Jr. and Cong. Lord Allan Velasco during the colorful opening ceremony starting at 10 a.m. on March 9.

Engr. Lauro Bautista will make the welcome remarks.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Assistant Executive Director for Southern Luzon Dr. Fred Paez will introduce the guest speakers, and NA Gener Vitto will make the closing remarks.

Leading the participants are GM Darwin Laylo, IMs Daniel Quizon, Michael Concio Jr., Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Ricardo de Guzman, Rolando Nolte and Angelo Young, WIM Kylen Joy Mordido, FMs Alekhine Nouri, Roel Abelgas, Christian Gian Karlo Arca and Mark Jay Bacojo.

“Marinduque, through Gov. Presbitero Velasco Jr. and Cong. Lord Allan Velasco, is ready to put its best face to welcome chess players and participants in the two-day festivities,” said Dr. Paez, an online Arena Grandmaster.

The tournament is sponsored by Gov. Presby Velasco and Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and jointly organized by the Marinduque Chess Association and Boac Knight Chess Club Inc., applying the Seven Round Swiss System, 20 minutes plus 5 seconds delay time control format which features open and kiddie divisions.

Cash prizes await winners with the Open champion taking home P50,000, the runner-up will receive P30,000 while the third-placer will settle for P20,000. The next four chessers will pocket P10,000, P7,000 , P5,000 and P3,000 each, respectively. The 7th to 10th placer will earn P2,000 each.

There will be a P2,000 cash prizes each for the category winners for senior, junior, lady and Marinduque.

In the kiddies division, the champion will earn P7,000 while 2nd to 6th placer will pocket P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P700, in order. The 7th to 10th placer will bring home P500 each.-Marlon Bernardino-
