VBO PUTS VIETNAM BOXING ON THE MAP PhilBoxing.com Sun, 09 Jul 2023 Vietnam has long been regarded as a hotbed of boxing talent, yet until only recently, the professional version of the sport had been outlawed in the country. The landscape shifted quite dramatically in 2018, when VSP Promotions staged large scale "exhibition" events. These shows pitched local champions against high level international boxers over 4 rounds and under pro rules, and they proved to be a resounding success! The VSP initiative not only showed that Vietnam had world class potential, they cultivated an audience in the millions wanting more. Their success led to the legalization of professional boxing, yet that advance also raised an interesting question - how would the sport be regulated in the future ? Enter the Vietnam Boxing Organization (VBO)!! The government endorsed VBO was formed during the time of the pandemic, and supervised it's first event in December 2022. The regulator has been founded upon the principles of adopting world's best practices, and holding the objective of providing safety and commercial viability to all it's participants. And they are certainly off to a great start! Since their inception, the VBO have already supervised seven shows for Vietnam's most prolific promoters - VSP Boxing and Cocky Buffalo. And it looks like being a busy year! Breaking news is that the heads of Asia's key regulatory authorities will descend upon Vietnam next week for a big international show to be held at The Grand Ho Tram Casino on July 15th. VBO Chairman Mr. Lim Song was quoted yesterday: "This is a very exciting and transitional time for both Vietnam and for boxing. We have professional fighters from many countries coming to perform next Saturday night, and we also have the WBO as valued participants in the main event bout. This would have been an impossibility until very recently! VBO has a charter to learn from the best, and spread our wings fast, as Vietnam has a lot of talented boxers. In that regard, I'm thrilled to announce the presence at next week's event of gentlemen that I regard as leaders in the region, and excellent mentors for this embryonic stage of our development. Aside from the added gravitas of having the WBO in attendance, we are welcoming the following esteemed heads of Asia's top regulatory bodies: Richard Clarin (GAB Philippines), Samson Lu (PBC China), Tsuyoshi Yasukochi (JBC Japan) and Aaron Jang (KBC South Korea) - assembled with a view to creating bilateral agreements which will enhance professional boxing for all. Vietnam is a beautiful country, and I believe we have all the necessary ingredients here for us to develop into the boxing hub of Asia. And who knows where that will stop!" The Grand Ho Tram Resort and Casino will host a seven bout card this Saturday July 15th. The event is promoted by Cocky Buffalo Promotions and the co-main events will feature local stars Nguyễn Văn Hải and Sam Minh Phát. |
