IM Garcia rules Naning Palami Rapid Open Chess Tournament

MANILA---International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia displayed his brilliant form to claim victory in the Naning Palami Rapid Open Chess Tournament - 2399 and below at the People Center and Library Tacloban in Tacloban City, Leyte on Sunday, June 25.
Garcia scored 7.5 points on account of seven wins and a draw in eight outings to bring home a PHP 30,000 cash prize.
He defeated Kyle Ryan Macayan in the first round, Allan Doroy in the second round, Ruel Dacillo in the third round, Vince Angelo Medina in the fourth round, Sherwin Tiu in the fifth round, Ruel Nuttal in the seventh round and Cesar Morante in the eight and final round. He drew with Fritz Bryan Porras in the sixth round.
“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Tacloban City and nearby provinces as well as those from Metro Manila joined the tournament," said Garcia, Ateneo de Manila University chess team program head under the guidance of Athletic Director Emmanuel Fernandez.
Tiu finished second with 7.0 points followed by Porras, Nuttal and United States chess master Pedro Tidoy (6.5 points).
Making it to the list of top eleven performers who got 6.0 points apiece were Adrian Joy Singson (6th), Prince Richvil Mella (7th), Eddieboy Galapon (8th), Ronald Mabale (9th), John Meg Lagusad (10th) and Norman Jasper Montejo (11th).
Meanwhile, Jethro Esplanada (6.0 points) topped the Standard event while Angel Nheazy Nicole Po (6.5 points) won the 15 years old and below category in this 2-day (June 24 and 25) chessfest, organized by Leyte Chess Foundation Chairman and National Arbiter Elmer Tunggolh.
