MANILA---FROM emerging as the country’s chess king, Daniel Quizon has turned his attention to achieving another feat — becoming a Balinas chess champion.

“It would also be on my bucket list. Winning the Balinas Open Rapid chess tournament on March 18," said Quizon after he topped AQ Prime ASEAN chess championship and 7th edition of Kamatyas Rapid Invitational chess tournament, respectively.

Quizon and reigning Philippine National Open champion Grandmaster Darwin Laylo lead the long list of top Pinoy woodpusher participants when the 2023 Balinas Open Rapid Chess Tournament gets underway on March 18, 9 am at the second floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell, Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.

The event will coincide with the birthday celebration of the late father, GM Rosendo Balinas Jr., and GM Rogelio Antonio Jr., in close cooperation with Mam China Aurelio, Mam Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen, Hongkong chess player Sunny Lo and Thailand based coach NM Gerald Ferriol. The Balinas family bankrolled this event which offers a total pot prize of 105,000 PHP to the winners with the champion getting the lion share of 20,000 PHP.

Approximately, 200 woodpushers from Metropolis and nearby provinces are expected by the organizers (Bayanihan Chess Club) to rub elbows and match wits for the one-day tournament, which is rated by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

Also set to fight for their place are 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Joey Antonio, 2022 Auckland, New Zealand Asian Senior 65-year-old over category champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, and 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion International Master Angelo Young.

Others are International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia, International Master Rolando Nolte, International Master Ronald Bancod, FIDE Master David Elorta, FIDE Master Christopher Castellano, 1996 Philippine Junior Champion NM Robert Suelo Jr., and National Master Romeo Alcodia.

The rising non-master hopefuls to watch out for in the open section are led by CM Jerry Areque, CM Genghis Imperial, NT/NA Glenn Hullana Garcia, Eduardo Campos Jr., Noel Jay Estacio, Richard Manzano, and Atty. Rodolfo Enrique "Rudy" Rivera.

The champion will take home 20,000 PHP, while second to fifth will get 10,000 PHP, 7,000 PHP, 5,000 PHP, and 3,000 PHP, respectively. While the 6th to 20th placers will pocket 1,000 PHP each, the lucky 100 spot will receive 1,000 PHP. The top PECA executive winner will bring home 5,000 PHP.
