IM Quizon strikes again in Kamatyas Chess tourney By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sun, 26 Feb 2023 Parañaque City---International Master Daniel Quizon, who is fresh from winning the AQ Prime ASEAN Chess Championships recently, stamped his class again by topping the 7th Edition Kamatyas FIDE Rated Invitational Rapid Chess Tournament dubbed as “Pawn Promotion” held at SM Sucat, Parañaque on Saturday. Quizon collected 8.5 points in nine outings to rule the 1 day (February 25) tilt organized by no other than International Master Roderick Nava – arguably the most famous Pinoy chess blogger in the Philippines today in partnership with Mr. David Almirol, patron and brains of Kamatyas Chess Club. “We do this to promote chess at the grassroots level and discover new sports talents,” said IM Nava. Quizon scored victories over Allan Gabriel Hilario in the first round, Francis Talaboc in the second round, Richard Villaseran in the third round, Kevin Mirano in the fourth round, GM Darwin Laylo in the fifth round, NM Mark Jay Bacojo in the sixth round, IM Michael Concio Jr. in the eight round and Alfredo Rapanot in the ninth and final round. He split the point with IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the seventh round. "I knew that this was a tough tournament. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy," said Quizon, who received the top prize of P30,000 plus the championship trophy for his efforts in this 157 player's field. IM Ronald Dableo, a Philippine Army chess team standout who is also the head coach of the University of Santo Tomas chess team, took the second place honors with 8.0 points. IM Concio and FM Randy Segarra registered 7.5 points each to place third and fourth place respectively. Rounding up to the top 10 with 7.0 points each were fifth FM Christian Mark Daluz, sixth NM Christian Gian Karlo Arca, seventh NM/Atty. Bob Jones Liwagon, eight Rapanot, ninth Garcia and tenth Mark Gerald Reyes. Quizon, Dableo, Concio and Arca are members of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FM Roel Abelgas. Earlier, Nava and Almirol made the ceremonial moves to kick off the one-day rapid tournament also graced by Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, NCFP CEO GM Jayson Gonzales, NCFP director Martin Gaticales and TV actor Jao Mapa.
