FIL-AM SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT DEBUTS AT MONTEBELLO By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 17 May 2008 A Fil-Am super middleweight boxer will debut on May 23, 2008 at the Quiet Canon in Montebello, CA. His name is Ian Mauleon. He was born and raise in Oakland, California, one of three boys of Mario and Erlinda Mauleon. Sadly, Mauleon was raised in an area where gangs were prevalent. Thus, it was not surprising that he and his brother drifted to such company. As a result, an elder brother was killed in a drive-by shooting at age 16 and another brother was in prison most of his teen years. Due to the unfortunate incidents that befell his brothers, Ian decided that it was time to channel his energy to something more positive and thus stay out of trouble. In 1994 he got involved with amateur boxing. Boxing suited him well as it satisfied his craving to fight without getting involved in street fights where he was known to knock-out guys with one swing of his right hand. Ian started his amateur career in his hometown, Oakland, California. Over time, he compiled a record of 49-7. Then he moved to LA to pursue the sweet science. Ian Mauleon. In his last amateur fight in May 2007, he lost a close fight during the US Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City, Utah. When asked why he turned to boxing, his reply was: - ?We were all raised with a competitive nature, that is why in everything I do, I always want to win. And with boxing, you don?t have teammates to rely on, so everything comes from yourself? Ian Mauleon will debut on Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Quiet Canon in Montebello, California. Montebello is a bedroom community east of Los Angeles where one will find many quaint houses with well manicured lawns. A good number of Filipinos reside and/or work in that town. Mauleon will be fighting a southpaw middle weight named Thomas Rittenbaugh. Rittenbaugh parades a 2-2-2 record, not a bad competition for a beginner like Mauleon. The fight card is a promotion of All Star Boxing, the Espada Boxing and the Brooklyn Gio?s Boxing Club. It is dubbed as ?Boxing of the Raising Stars. Tickets are still available at the ALL Star Boxing. Call Ramon at 213-926-1885 or John at 818-795-7084 Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
