FARENAS UNDAUNTED BY UNKNOWN OPPONENT By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 16 May 2008 Los Angeles, CA:- Michael Farenas, the up and coming prot?g? of WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa was in full swing of his training when we walked into the Wildcard Gym late this morning. We were there to cover the training of Manny Pacquiao. Also there in his full battle gear was Chris Farina, the Top Rank photographer. Farenas was in the middle of sparring with a fairly good fighter under the watchful eyes of his trainer, Freddie Roach. One thing that was readily noticeable was the changes in the speed and the delivery of his punches. The timing was excellent and the volume has increased. One pundit even commented that ?he sure is getting to be like Gerry?. After sparring, Farenas hit the mitts with Freddie Roach. Much to delight of the people who were there, he responded well to all the verbal coaching of Roach and with so much ease. Every now and then they will stop and discuss a certain strategy. Then they will proceed to implement it. Farenas did not personally know who his opponent yet but the kid said that it does not really matter. He is preparing himself to be able to address whatever is presented to him at Aguacalientes, Mexico on May 17th. One thing sure, he is not planning to suffer the fate of Rodel Mayol. Farenas leaves for Mexico tomorrow with his Team. Note: (1) As this report was being prepared, we found out the name of the opponent of Farenas. He is Fermin de los Santos . He holds a record of 10-11-7 (7KO). Farenas parades a 20-2-2 (18KO). But we were already back at the office (we left Wildcard at 4:30 PM) filing this report so we did not get a chance to inform him. (2) Unfortunately, there was also a change in the schedule of Pacquiao?s training for today. Instead of the usual 12 noon to 3 PM, which we thought we could cover, team members called to inform us late in the afternoon that he will start training at 6PM. Since we were already back at the office some 35 miles away we decided to forego returning to the gym. Too bad we will miss the session today, but not to worry, there will be more to come and we will be there to cover them. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
