It's Jake, Not Jade, Bornea

It is now clear that it is Jake Bornea and not his undefeated fighting twin brother Jade, who will be going up against world rated Japanese Takuma Inoue in the scheduled world title unification bout between Takuma's older brother Naoya "Monster" Inoue and Paul Butler in December in Japan.

This clarification was made yesterday by Jade Bornea's promoter JC Manangquil upon inquiry of Games and Amusements Board (GAB) boxing division chief Jackie Lou Cacho Ornido amidst contrasting reports in the sports media including in Japan that say it is his ward Jade and not Jake who is under Promoter/Manager Brico Santig.

Santig himself confirmed this as he sought in a letter GAB authority for his ward Jake Bornea to fight abroad to be accompanied by Santig and Dexter Benatero.

Up until yesterday morning, even the usually reliable asiaboxing.com remained in quandary about the matter as it reported the full cast of the anticipated blockbuster boxing promotion to be held December in Japan.

The Japan-based online boxing site in part reported:

"In a non-title bout Takuma Inoue (16-1, 3) [井上拓真] is set to face Jade Bornea (18-0, 12) in a 10 rounder. This is a perplexing bout as it's scheduled to be around 122lbs, and Bornea is a Super Flyweight, whilst Inoue is a natural Bantamweight. This should prove to be a technical bout, if it goes ahead as suggested, but is a bit of a risk for Bornea, who seemed destined to get an IBF Super Flyweight world title fight in the new year. (Note - It has been speculated that it will be Jake Bornea, but at the moment all sources form Japan state it is indeed Jade)"

This prompted this writer to request GAB boxing chief Ornido for clarification.

Ornido promptly contacted Manangquil who is handling Jade Bornea who confirmed that it is not his prize ward who will be fighting Takuma this December. Jade is campaigning at the lower super flyweight class and is being projected as possible next world title challenger for Argentine IBF titlist Fernando Martinez, Jerwin Ancajas's conqueror.

Jade Bornea is still unbeaten and highly rated by major world boxing bodies and these could be the reasons organisers of the Japan fight do not care about the current mix up due perhaps to marketing strategy. It has been a practice in boxing to ride on and exploit the popularity of certain boxers to sell fights although at times it arises from mistaken identities or intentional misidentification.

Jade, known for his alias as the "Hurricane", recently made headlines with thrilling wins over Muhammad Obbadi and Ivan Meneses in the US further boosting his credentials and world ranking. As a former decorated amateur, he once held wins over current and ex-world champions Morudjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan and Kosei Tanaka of Japan. He totes a record of 17 Wins, 11 via the short route against no loss or draw.

Jake Bornea, known as "D Twins," on the other hand already has three losses in his ledger though he is still considered a viable fighter at the heavier super bantamweight division. He is coming off a long inactivity though.

The Bornea twins were born on June 2, 1995 in Arakan, Cotabato del Sur.
