Danny Garcia scores a Majority Decision Over David Benavidez! By Ralph Rimpell PhilBoxing.com Sun, 31 Jul 2022  Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York -- A big name has made his presence known to the 154lbs division. Undisputed champion (WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF) Jermell Charlo and all other mandatory fighters in line for a shot at the 154lbs crown. That big name is former two division champ Danny Garcia. Danny Garcia faced Jose Benavidez, Jr. Reports had it that Benavidez had rehydrated up to 172lbs and in addition a weight advantage had a slight height advantage as well. The first four rounds were competitive. This writer scored it even at 2 rounds a piece for each fighter. By the 5th round Benavidez was more interested in showboating and making faces at Garcia instead of working behind his jab to set up combinations. Benavidez was the bigger fighter physically but did not use that to his advantage. Meaning he didn't fight like as though he was the bigger fighter. However, Garcia worked behind his jab, used good movement, and picked his shots well. At the end of the fight Garcia was awarded a rightful decision victory. 
Garcia improves his record to 37-3, 27KOs, while Benavidez drops to 27-2-1,18KOs . What's next for both fighters? Garcia will likely fight for a vacant title against a top contender if Charlo vacates or is stripped of one if his titles and continue to cash million dollar checks. Benavidez has to decide if he wants to continue with his career or retire because it will be a tough road and much needed signature victory over a top contender before he headlines another Pay Per View Card.
