Nine Pinoy Boxers in Ring, Eight in TBRB Ratings

PhilBoxing.com

Pacquiao (L) and Magsayo.

Albeit the lengthy hiatus forced upon professional boxing and virtually every human activities by the Covid pandemic, top Filipino fighters have managed to retain their rankings in the latest ratings of the highly respected Ring Magazine and the Transnational Boxing Ratings Board or TBRB.

Leading the pack is Manny Pacquiao, our reigning WBA welterweight super world champion, who also retained his ranking at number ten in the pound for pound lists of both the Ring and TBRB.

Pacquiao is rated #2 at TBRB behind only Errol Spence and above Terrence Crawford but only #3 in the Ring behind the two Americans. Manny is targeting a fight against either of the two when boxing returns later this year.

Mark Magsayo is the highest ranked Pinoy fighter in the higher weights after Pacquiao at #5 in the featherweight or 126 lbs. weight class in the Ring ratings but he is not included in the TBRB list in the same division. He is also girding for a title fight versus any of the world champions, Gary Russell, Josh Warrington and Xu Can when boxing returns.

Nonito Donaire Jr.

Former multi division world titlist Nonito Donaire and current WBO champion Johnriel Casimero are also highly rated in the bantamweight or 118 lbs. class behind current Ring lineal and WBA/IBF unified titlist Naoya Inoue. Donaire is #1 in the Ring and #3 in the TBRB while Casimero is #2 in the TBRB and #3 in the Ring.

Junriel Casimero.

Casimero was supposed to meet Inoue in a title unification last April 24 while Donaire was set to clash with WBC champion Nordine Oubaali (Ring #2 and TBRB # 4) this May, with both fights originally set in the USA now up for reschedule at still to be determined later dates.

Jerwin Ancajas.

Long reigning IBF champion Jerwin Ancajas is the lone ranked Filipino in the ratings of the Ring and the TBRB in the super flyweight or 115 lbs class where he is both rated at #4 behind recognized universal champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico. Former multi division and WBO titlist Donnie Nietes was dropped from the rankings due to lengthy inactivity.

Ancajas was also set to defend his world title versus a Mexican Javier Rodriguez last April in the USA when the covid 19 forced its cancellation.

Giemel Magramo.

Giemel Magramo is rated #7 at TBRB and #10 in the Ring at flyweight or 112 lbs class topped by the foursome of Kosei Tanaka, Moruti Mtbalane, Artem Dalakian and Julio Cesar Martinez. Magramo was set to fight Ring #8 Junto Nakatani also last April 4 in Japan for the vacant WBO flyweight title. The Japan Boxing Commission has postponed that fight for a later date yet to be determined.

Edward Heno.

Edward Heno remained rated by both the Ring and TBRB at 7 and #5, respectively in the light flyweight or 108 lbs class ruled by Kenshiro Teraji of Japan. He is joined by undefeated Mark Vicelles who is rated # 8 by the TBRB.

Vic Saludar.

Former WBO titlist Victorio Saludar is rated #5 by both the Ring and TBRB in the minimumweight or 105 lbs class ruled by the Thai duo of Wanheng Menayothin and Knockout CP Freshmart. Current IBF titlist Pedro Taduran who defended his crown via technical draw with Mexican Daniel Valledares in February is rated only by the Ring at #10.

Former WBO bantamweight champion Marlon Tapales was rated previously by both the Ring and TBRB at super bantamweight or 122 lbs class but he dropped out following a sorry TKO loss to ex titlist Ryosuke Iwasa who is rated at #5 in the Ring.

At least most of our champions and leading ring campaigners kept their lofty rankings in the two most credible and respected global boxing ratings bodies notwithstanding the adverse impact of the ongoing pandemic.
