GORRES, IBF #6, RING #9 vs DARCHINYAN, IBF #5, RING #10

PhilBoxing.com

It's "Now or Never." It is the much-awaited comeback fight of Z ?The Dream" Gorres against Australia-based Armenian Vakhtang ?Vic? Darchinyan for the IBF super flyweight eliminator at the classy Waterfront Hotel Grand Ballroom on February 2. The winner of the fight will be the mandatory challenger to IBF champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia.

Gorres, ranked No. 6 by IBF, is currently holding a record of 27-2-1, 15 KOs, while Darchinyan rated IBF No. 5 displays a 29-1, 23 KOs card. In the latest Ring Magazine ratings, Gorres was ranked No. 9, while Darchinyan was No. 10 in the superflyweight division. Gorres has been on the Ring ratings for 34 weeks now, while Darchinyan has stayed just for 2 weeks in the Bible of Boxing rankings.

Most boxing analysts believed Gorres will be into a tougher test of his professional career after he was denied of the world title, losing a controversial decision against Fernando Montiel for the WBO superflyweight championship on February 24 last year at the Cebu Coliseum.

In "The Moment of Truth," both boxers displayed amazing talent, making it complicated for the judges to decide the winner. Gorres was deducted one point in the 10th and another in the 12th round, for holding his opponent. In the end, Montiel won by a contentious split decision which drew the ire of the predominantly Cebuano crowd.

The 25-year-old fighter from Mandaue City has already learned his lessons. Training rigidly at the ALA Gym and sparring against stronger opponents was his routine since the fight was officially announced. Gorres said that he was well-prepared to beat Darchinyan, who depends mostly on his powerful punches.

Gorres is a rising boxer known for his fabulous footwork and stamina and his ability to withstand burly strength. His foe will have a hard time hurting or flooring him. His main weakness though is the lack of punching power which inflicts slight injury on opponents.

Darchinyan?s dilemma will be the speed and accuracy of the Cebuano fighter. The Armenian-Australian will be looking for a knockout win and measured his ability against the lustrous Filipino fighter when he scored a TKO win over Federico Catubay October 20, 2007.

But in that fight, Catubay has pushed Darchinyan to the limit while Gorres has considerably improved over the months since his eight-round TKO victory over former world champion Eric Ortiz on August 11, 2007.

Darchinyan is a southpaw boxer and he currently trains under Billy Hussein, brother of boxers Nedal and Hussein Hussein. He was once handled by former 3-division world champion, Jeff Fenech in Sydney, Australia.
