Pinoy IM Haridas Pascua wins 46th Selangor Open Chess Tournament

Filipino International Master (IM) Haridas Burlaza Pascua pocketed the top honors in the 46th Selangor Open Chess Tournament held at the Cititel Mid Valley Grand Ballroom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday (May 1, 2019).
The Baguio-based Pascua who hails from Mangatarem, Pangasinan collected 7.5 points on six wins and three draws to win the nine-round tournament and went home with the top prize Malaysian ringgit (RM) 6,000.
If Pascua raises his Elo rating from 2424 to 2500, he will become the Philippines' latest grandmaster. He has a live 2440 Fide rating.
Pascua scored victories over Lim Kian Hwa of Malaysia in the first round, Arena International Master Muzzaffar Ahmad of Malaysia in the second round, Chen Meng Boon Marcus of Singapore in the third round, countryman Ian Cris Udani in the fifth round, Khandhar Kaushal of Malaysia in the seventh round and Fide Master Pitra Andyka of Indonesia in the eight and penultimate round.
He split the point with Fide Master Tobing Daniel Hermawan Lumban of Indonesia in the fourth round, compatriots Grandmaster Darwin Laylo in the sixth round and International Master Oliver Dimakiling in the ninth and final round.
GM Laylo took runner-up honors after superior tie break points with fellow seven pointers FM Andyka who settled for third place. IM Dimakiling led the group of 6.5 pointers that includes Mohd Saprin Amir Ghaazi of Malaysia and Fide Master Brian Dew of Hongkong.
Udani, another Filipino bet Alvin Roma, Khandhar Kaushal, Ahmad Nazari Emir Rusyaidi, Chew Zhi Qi and Tham Tick Hong Jax of Malaysia shared the 6th to 12th places with 6 points each in this 71 player's field.-Marlon Bernardino-
