NBA -- Towns drops 28 as Wolves edge Mavs, 110-108

DALLAS -- The Minnesota Timberwolves scored a 110-108 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday at the American Airlines Center.
Although both teams have been eliminated from the playoffs, the sellout crowd of 19,576 focused on Mavs star forward, Dirk Nowitzki. In acknowledgment of his upcoming retirement at the end of the season, representatives from Dallas County honored Nowitzki by naming the month of April "Dirk Nowitzki Month".
While the Mavs never led in the first half, they stayed on pace with the Timberwolves, ending the half tied at 58-all. The Timberwolves committed 50% less turnovers with four compared to the Mavs' eight, but scored 10 less points in the paint at 22 to the Mavs' 32. The Mavs stayed alive by grabbing 24 rebounds to the Timberwolves' 16, but were only 18.8% from 3-point land as to the Timberwolves' 33.3% from the arc.
However, the Timberwolves started to pull away from the Mavs, going up ten points by the end of the third quarter, 89-79. Not to be outdone, the Mavs fought to tie the game at 108-all with less than one minute left in regulation. The Mavs attempted a last second shot to tie the game, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. The Mavs had to settle on guard Luka Doncic notching the team's only double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Nowitzki ended the night with 9 points, 2 assists, and 4 rebounds. Timberwolves star center Karl-Anthony Towns ended the night with his own double-double, scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds.
The teams will have a day of rest before playing again on Friday when the Mavs host the Memphis Grizzlies and the Timberwolves travel back north to host the Miami Heat.
