BOXING ?IDOL? WILL BE KNOWN DEC. 28

PhilBoxing.com

The day has come. On December 28, the Filipinos will know who will be the contenders to win the first Boxing Idol Championship Award in the junior fly, super fly, super bantam, and super feather weight divisions. Premier sports outfit ALA Promotions and giant television network ABS CBN have announced the final bout, this season, of the biggest boxing reality show in the country today, simply dubbed ?Idol: Search for the Next Pinoy Boxing Star.?

From the original 32 boxers, the contest has gone down to eight: two contenders will fight for their chance to become the first IDOL boxing star. Jerome Bontog of Mandaue City and Rolito Nengasca of Cebu face off in the super flyweight division. In the super bantamweight category, Rufino Mante of Bohol will slug out against Alejandro Belonguel of Samboan, Cebu. The final battle will showcase Pedro Salondro of Cebu and Alde de Zosa of Mandaue City for the super featherweight IDOL crown. The show will feature slugsters Jerson Mancio of Agusan del Sur and Saddam Barambangan of General Santos City in the junior fly weight division as opener.

Bontoc is a southpaw from Opao who pledged to put up a staunch challenge to the 1.5 lb heavier and an inch-taller Rolito Nengasca of Barili. Negasca is an orthodox boxer. Featherweight contenders Salondro of San Remegio and De Zosa of Labogon are both orthodox fighters. De Zosa gets an edge with his reach two inches farther than Salondro. But Salondro is a technical pugilist that can bridge the distance with a swift close swoop at De Zosa.

Mante of Ubay is expected to pose a stiff challenge against Belonguil of Sambian for the featherweight division. Both fighters are orthodox. Although 19-yr-old Belonguil is older than a year and heavier by a pound over Mante, the latter has a slight advantage in height and reach.

The championship bout starts at 7 PM at the ALA Boxing Gym in Nasipit, Talamban. Much more, it is free and open to the public.
