FIVE OF THE BIGGEST FIGHTS SET FOR 2019

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in recent years, with fans being treated to fights between the top talents throughout the divisions in what has been a throwback to past times when the best collided with the best without hesitation.
The retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr saw many other names rise to prominence in his absence from competitive bouts, as he instead opting to undertake exhibition outings for a quick cash-grab and attempts to remain relevant. Mexico's Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has taken up the American's mantle as the leading superstar attraction in the sport, while Britain's Anthony Joshua has gathered huge momentum and sell-out crowds across his homeland in the UK.

There has been no shortage of blockbuster match-ups from the lower divisions up to heavyweight in previous years and that doesn't look set to change anytime soon, with 2019 already holding several key scheduled bouts. So, with hopefully another hugely entertaining year ahead, here are five of the biggest and best fights that are set to take place throughout the coming months.

Errol Spence Jr v Mikey Garcia

The most imminent bout that has fight fans divided and anticipating the opening bell falls on March 16th, when reigning IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr will defend his crown against surprise challenger Mikey Garcia. As of February 18th, Garcia is regarded as a substantial 10/3 underdog with Betway to stun the boxing world by overcoming Spence Jr in their highly awaited 147 pounds clash on St Patrick's Day weekend, having jumped up in weight once again to contest arguably the best in the division right now.

The four-division world title holder claimed his first belt back down at featherweight and most recently got his hands on a strap at 140 pounds too. But his jumping through the divisions hasn't come against opposition quite the standard as Spence Jr and the American is a massive fighter for the division, one who will likely move up in the near future. It's clear why 'the Truth' is seen as the odds-on 1/5 favourite to prevail and retain his belt for the third time. Garcia has it all to do at the AT&T Stadium in Texas and a win would go down as a truly historic feat for the 31-year-old.

Terence Crawford v Amir Khan

The one fighter currently contesting Errol Spence Jr for the position as number one at welterweight on the planet is former undisputed light-welterweight kingpin Terence Crawford and on April 20th he will look to boost his status further. 'Bud' is set to collide with Britain's Amir Khan, a former world champion rearing from Bolton, Manchester, who has previously made a name for himself across the United States as well.
After making a return to the ring last year, Khan has been in search of a world title and those big fights once again. He's got exactly what he wanted but it could prove to be a decisive one in his long-standing career. Crawford is seen by many to be the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world at the moment, after his impressive climb up the ladder in recent years, and this looks to be one step too far for a daring but perhaps foolish Khan.

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs

Any time that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez takes to the squared-circle the eyes of the boxing world are undoubtedly cast towards him. The red-headed Mexican has become the leading light in the sport in terms of pay-per-view sales and global attraction in light of former conqueror Floyd Mayweather Jr's retirement.

His next clash with fellow middleweight world titlist Daniel Jacobs will be another massive event, which also falls on May 4th, the Cinco de Mayo weekend that sees his home nation come together for their annual celebration. 'Canelo' will hope to follow up his victory over Gennady Golovkin with a jubilant triumph of his own against 'the Miracle Man'.

Naoya Inoue vs. Emmanuel Rodriguez

On May 18th Glasgow, Scotland will be treated to first-hand viewing of one of the best fighters in the world, Japan's three-weight world champion Naoya Inoue. 'The Monster' will take to Scottish soil as part of the World Boxing Super Series against slick fellow bantamweight titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez. Prepare for a treat of a bout.

Anthony Joshua vs. Jarrell Miller

Unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will finally make his long-awaited American debut on June 1st, as he prepares to defend his belts at 'the Mecca of Boxing', New York City's Madison Square Garden. Frustratingly, it won't be against Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury, but instead home Brooklyn hope Jarrell Miller. 'Big Baby' will hope to cause a huge upset in what is still an intriguing match-up in the Big Apple.
