WBC NAMES MAYWEATHER ?FIGHTER OF THE YEAR?
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 21 Dec 2007

In what the WBC says has been a great year for boxing in which all existing pay-per-view records and attendance figures were broken with great shows in many countries and ?most importantly network television coming back to cover the sport in many countries, the WBC has named Floyd Mayweather Jr ?Fighter of the Year.?
The WBC said the selection of Mayweather was an :?unquestionable unanimous decision due to his historic battles in 2007, defeating Oscar De La Hoya to win the WBC super welterweight title and knocking out previously undefeated Ricky Hatton in a WBC welterweight title defense.?
WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman noted that Mayweather has won 5 WBC belts in 5 different divisions and is ?without a doubt the proudest WBC champion in the world.? Sulaiman added, ?Floyd has become the super star of boxing and has found his well-deserved place in history.?
Erik ?El Terrible? Morales? fight against WBC lightweight champion David Diaz was the top nominee for the Most Dramatic Fight. It said Diaz defeated the former three-time world champion by split decision ?after being knocked down in the first round and finishing with a closed eye in a dramatic fight.?
Leading the selection for Knockout of the Year was that of Jorge Linares over Gamaliel Diaz which the WBC classified as ?a tremendous one-punch knockout in Cancun, Mexico.?
The Venezuelan WBC featherweight champion who defeated popular and longtime former champion Oscar Larios was also named ?Emerging Star of the Year.?
The choice of ?Event of the Year? was clearly the Mayweather-De La Hoya showdown which ?broke all existing pay-per-view and live gate? in a fight billed as ?The World Awaits.?
