A look back at Ireland's 2018 Six Nations win PhilBoxing.com Tue, 05 Feb 2019 With just over a week until the Six Nations kicks-off, Ireland will be looking to defend their crown when they host England in Dublin on February 2nd. Joe Schmidt?s men are the early favourites (10/11) to win the tournament outright and they?ll be looking to realise their potential once more. The Irish enjoyed one of their best ever years of rugby in 2018, beating New Zealand on home turf for the first time ever and they beat Australia twice in their own back yard during the autumn internationals. In fact, the Irish only tasted one defeat throughout the entirety of 2018 and their fans will be quietly confident of another stellar year in 2019. Here, we take a look back at Ireland?s Six Nation success from last year as they grabbed their third ever Grand Slam. France, Italy & Wales Ireland got off to a winning start when they edged past France 15-13 in Paris, with Johnny Sexton scoring all the points. The fly-half gave Schmidt?s side a half-time lead of 9-3 before a second-half penalty and drop-kick completed his haul. A brilliant start for the Irish with France providing a stern test. A week later, Italy were the visitors to Lansdowne Road and the hosts recorded their biggest win of the tournament. The 56-19 win ensured Ireland got the bonus point after completing eight tries. Bundee Aki, Rory Best, Keith Earls, Conor Murray, Robbie Henshaw (2) and Jacob Stockdale (2) were the scorers. Sexton kicked five conversions with Joey Carbery scoring the other three. Wales were next up at Lansdowne Road but the Irish were too strong once again, brushing Warren Gatland?s side away 37-27. Tries from Aki, Cian Healy, Dan Leavy and two from Stockdale ensured that Ireland picked up another valuable bonus point for scoring five tries or more. Sexton was deadly with his boot once again, scoring two conversions and a penalty. Scotland and England Ireland made it four wins from four when they saw off Scotland 28-8 in Dublin, meaning that a victory over England would see Schmidt?s side pick up the Grand Slam. Tries from Sean Cronin, Murray and another brace from Stockdale were enough to see off the Scots. Sexton added another four conversions as well, with Blair Kinghorn (try) and Greig Laidlaw (penalty) replying for Gregor Townsend?s side. England?s loss to France on match day four meant the Irish claimed the Six Nations prior to their meeting at Twickenham, making it their first success since 2015. Eddie Jones? side were about to feel the full force of Ireland?s Grand Slam aspirations and the Irish were not about to become unstuck on St Patrick?s Day. Tries from Stockdale, Garry Ringrose and CJ Stander meant Ireland beat their biggest rivals on their own patch; taking their third ever Grand Slam with a 24-15 win. The defending champions were borderline woeful on a snowy Twickenham afternoon, losing their last three games of the tournament. Although the English did push hard to try and redeem themselves, there?s no denying that it was Ireland?s day, Ireland?s year and Ireland?s ?Slam. A fourth Grand Slam is a very tempting 9/4 currently, but you can check out all the latest Betfair Six Nations markets here. |
