SM City Legaspi hosts 1st Bicol International Chess Challenge PhilBoxing.com Wed, 07 Nov 2018 AFTER the recent success of the 3rd WGM Janelle Mae Frayna and Mayor Noel Rosal Bicol Chess Championships held Oct. 13-14, SM City Legazpi will again be making history when it becomes venue of the 1st Bicol International Chess Challenge slated Dec. 7-13, 2018 at its Food Hall which affords a scenic view of majestic Mayon Volcano, the 8th wonder of the world for its perfect cone. The FIDE-rated tourney will be played in standard format with time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment. The side event will be a rapid format with 15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment. Up for grabs in the standard play are cash prizes worth Php 110,000.00 with the champion pocketing Php30,000, 2nd Php20,000 3RD Php15.000, 4TH Php10,000, 5TH Php8,000, 6th Php6,000, 7th Php4,000, th Php3,000, 9th Php2,000, 10th Php2,000. Category prizes of Php 2,000 each goes to the best U18, U16, U12, best girl and best veteran. Mechanics of the rapid side event will be announced during the opening on Dec. 7. The tournament is being organized by the D?Plaza Chess Association of the Philippines with the assistance of the Chess Director Chess Club Coalition of the Philippines chaired by Martin ?Binky? Gaticales, NCFP director & NCFP Promotion & Program Committee Chairman, vice-chair Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, NCFP director & treasurer, with FIDE Master (FM) Narquinden Reyes as club treasurer. Other club directors are Luis Ramos (NCFP director) and Atty. Edmundo Legaspi (NCFP director). U.S.-based D?Plaza director and Caloocan High School Batch 83 alumnus Carmelito V. Mejia, who will be arriving in Legazpi City in December to personally oversee the tournament, is urging players to register early so they can avail of substantial discounts i.e. Oct. 31-Php1500, Nov. 16-Php2000, Dec. 4- Php2500.
