TAPALES WANTS TO PROVE SOMETHING By Tonton Alcos-Antogop PhilBoxing.com Sat, 29 Sep 2018 Marlon Tapales on the scales Saturday. MANDALUYONG CITY-Stripped of his world championship belt on the scales because of his weight problems, Marlon Tapales (30-2, 13 KOs), wants to prove something. ?Of course, ito po iyong binalik ko gusto kong makita na aakyat ako ng timbang na may ibubuga pa rin ako (this is the reason that I came back, I want to be seen atop the ring who still have something left), the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion said to the crowd at the TV5 Media Center here during the pre-fight press conference of ESPN/5- GerryPens Promotions Inc. Dave Penalosa vs Twalib Tuwa boxing card. Since he lost his belt in July 2017, Tapales went inactive. He was stripped of his WBO bantamweight belt despite knocking down Shohorei Omori in the 11th round in their fight in Osaka, Japan because he failed to catch the 118 lbs. weight limit. That weight issue haunted Tapales as he also lost US$15,000 of his US$150,000 purse but tomorrow when he climbs back the ring at the Skydome in SM North EDSA, he moved up to junior featherweight where he described it as ?more comfortable.? Tapales will fight against Tanzanian Goodluck Mrema (22-3, 12 KOs) under the tutelage of former Tanzanian boxer-olympian Emmanuel Mlundwan, who also served as the interpreter of the Tanzanian boxers that will be engaging in the card. Marlon Tapales and Goodluc Mrema pose during Saturday's weighin held at ESPN 5 headquarters in Mandaluyong. Also in photo is JC Manangquil (2nd from left) who now co-manages Tapales with Wakee Salud and promoter Gerry Penalosa (2nd from right). ?Mas komportable ako ngayon at saka mas may intense ako. Mas may makita sila na aksyon (I am more comfortable now and has more intense. They could see more action),? Tapales described his present condition. Mrema bowed to Cebuano Jeo Santisima in July 2017 but bounced back in winning five of his seven matches after that. Meanwhile, the featured main event between Dave Penalosa (13-0, 9 KOs) and former Tanzanian featherweight champion Twalib Tuwa (21-5-2, 14 KOs) is expected to be exciting as Penalosa promised to show what he got as 3rd generation Penalosa professional boxer. ?Because of family, the Penalosa. And I think I have the potential,? the 27-year old son of former two-time world boxing champion Dodie Boy Penalosa declared. Carl Penalosa, Dodie Boy?s father, was a former Philippine boxing champion, himself. In an earlier Philboxing.com interview Dave revealed he is eyeing a regional boxing tilt, which was confirmed by his uncle, Gerry, also two-time former world boxing champion turned businessman/boxing promoter. Gerry said that if Dave will win against Tuwa, he will request that his nephew be rated in the top ten of featherweights in the world, probably the World Boxing Organization (WBO). ?If possible we will ask the boxing body, possibly WBO to rank him. Hopefully by the first quarter of 2019, we could give him (Dave) a break, if possible world (interim) title, if possible,? adding, ?with the help of course of ESPN/5 because without them, im-po-sible (imposible).? ESPN/5 will cover live on television the featured bouts, which also included the fight for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia South championship between Carlo Cesar Penalosa (12-1, 5 KOs) and another Tanzanian pugilist Jemsi Kibazange (11-2-2, 1 KO). Dave and Carlo trained in Qingdao, China for at least a month prior to their fights, starting from Manila for a couple of weeks. The Penalosa cousins were both successful in their earlier encounters with separate Indonesian fighters in Tagbilaran City last June. Dave won again Ricky Manufue via 2nd round stoppage while Carlo demolished Iwan Keys in the 5th after the Indonesian threw in the towel. Another expected exciting bout is non-title match between reigning interim WBA bantamweight world champion Reymart Gaballo, 22, (19-0, 16 KOs) of Sanman boxing gym in Gensan vs Julias Kirazawe (29-6-1, 15 KOs). Gaballo who is from Polomolok, South Cotabato won his title over American Stephon Young at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida in March this year. Gaballo who told this writer that he actually had attended school in General Santos City, also said that he is inspired owing to the reputation of being called by some quarters as the ?heir-apparent? of reigning WBO welterweight king Manny Pacquiao. ?Na pi-pressure din pero na i-inspire kung baga, nagdagdagan yung ginagawa araw-araw sa pag training ko sa gym para naman po kahit di ko makaya ang naabot ni idol Manny, makilala din po ako, (I am pressured but also inspired to do more in my training in the gym so that even if I can not reach what idol Manny did, I would also be known), he said in the press conference preceeded by the official weigh-in of the boxing promotion. The bout venue will open in the morning as the curtain raiser will start at 11a.m. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tonton Alcos-Antogop. |
