MAYORGA RETIRES VARGAS
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sat, 24 Nov 2007
LOS ANGELES -- Fernando ?El Feroz? Vargas, the Pride of Oxnard, California gave his all in an effort to leave boxing on a winning note. But, three time world champion Ricardo ?El Matador? Mayorga of Nicaragua had other plans for him.
Tonight at the posh Staples Center, before an almost full house crowd of Mexicans and Nicaraguans, Mayorga knocked down Vargas twice, once in the first round and again on the last few seconds of round 11 enroute to majority decision win.
Glen Trowbridge scored 117-112 for Mayorga. Max de Luca did the same but had it at 115 to 111. David Mendoza scored it as 113-113 draw. Mendoza?s score seem odd given the fact that Mayorga scored two knockdowns. But that was his point of view.
The fight was a see-saw battle with both fighters having their way in different rounds. Vargas in one of the exchanges in the third suffered a cut over his left eye but the cut did not make a difference in the fight.
Immediately after the fight Vargas declared that the fight with Mayorga was his last. He is retiring from fighting.
With the win, Mayorga improved to 28-6-1 (22KO) and Vargas closed his career with a respectable 26-5-0 (22KO).
