AUSSIE BIZMAN WANTS THE PEÑALOSAS By Tonton Alcos-Antogop PhilBoxing.com Fri, 06 Jul 2018 Dave Pe?alosa. TAGBILARAN CITY - Perhaps a mere coincidence, but the recent brawl between the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team and the Australian Boomers in the FIBA World Cup eliminations did not really meant an end of sportsmanship between the Philippines and Australia. In boxing, an Australian in fact avers his preference for Filipinos and this goes to the cousins Dave and Carlo Pe?alosa, who will show their wares tommorow here for the boxing promotion called, "Rumble in Bohol." Pierre Trad, a Sydney based businessman wants to manage the career of the Pe?alosa cousins. "I saw them both in training, they are really good and so I want to sort of manage them," Trad told this writer inside the Bohol Tropics Hotel and Resort here where the Pe?alosas are being billeted by the fight's co-sponsor Tagbilaran City Mayor John Geesnel "Baba" Yap. Trad said he sees a bright future ahead of the cousins, adding, he wants to formalize the offer to Gerry Pe?alosa, the uncle of the two and the fight promoter. The businessman is a personal guest of Gerry who flew in from Australia just to watch the fight at the Bohol Wisdom School Gym. Trad is also being invited by Gerry to accompany him to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to watch at ringside the Manny Pacquiao- Lucas Matthysse World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight championship bout on July 15. Meanwhile, the Boholanos were wowed by the showmanship and boxing skills of the protagonists of the bout in the public workout held at the Island City Mall last Wednesday afternoon. Dave is being pitted against Indonesian journeyman Ricky Manufoe at featherweight while Carlo will face another Indonesian Iwan Key. The fight is the comeback of Dave who has been inactive since 2015 after making a clean 12-0 victories, 8 of them by knockouts. Dave is the son of Gerry's elder brother Diosdado "Dodie Boy" Pe?alosa, Sr., himself a former world boxing champion like his younger brother, Gerry. Carlo on the other hand is the son of Marissa, the sister of the Pe?alosa brothers. Dodie held the Intl. Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight and flyweight championship. Gerry for his part was the former World Boxing Council (WBC) junior bantamweight champion and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight titlist. The boxing bouts will be aired live via ESPN-TV5 starting at 12:30 noon till 4pm. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tonton Alcos-Antogop. |
