Canelo vs GGG: Replay or Rematch? By Carmelo Maisonet PhilBoxing.com Fri, 15 Jun 2018 ![]() Amidst the clenbuterol controversy and contractual disagreements, the fight between Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez (49-1-2 34KOs) and Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin (38-0-1 34KOs) has been up in the air awaiting approval. Golden Boy promoter and former boxing star Oscar De La Hoya gave the GGG camp a deadline to accept the terms or there would be no fight. The GGG camp had until 12 noon PST on 6/13/2018 to decide. The deadline came and went with no answer and things began to look grim. Several hours later according to De La Hoya?s verified twitter account, he stated that he was ?happy to inform that we have a fight September 15!!!!! #CaneloGGG2?. The delay was due to negotiating a ?fair? purse split. GGG has referenced in the past the ?unfair? 70-30 split in Canelo?s favor for the first fight. After Canelo?s suspension due to traces of clenbuterol found in Canelo?s system, Golovkin felt he deserved a 50-50 split. Ultimately GGG reportedly agreed to 42.5 percent of the purse. Now with the fight on do we anticipate a very ?replay? of the first fight with the fight playing out about the same as the first fight or will the fighters make the necessary adjustments to make it a different fight? One adjustment Golovkin would need to make to be victorious would be cutting the ring off better. Golovkin just couldn?t cut off the ring as well as he normally does. Golovkin needs to stick with the jab, cut off the ring and pick apart Canelo. On the other hand, Canelo hopefully will work on his stamina. Canelo was doing well to take little damage from the heavy handed ?Khazak thunder?, countering when he could although Canelo?s punches weren?t really phasing the granite chinned GGG. Towards the later rounds Canelo?s output began to slow, relying more on his footwork to get away rather than keeping GGG at bay with his counters. Canelo needs to keep that punch output high. With his recent knee injury, hopefully Canelo?s health can be fully restored by September because his evasive movement helped him in the first fight. If Canelo has any type of hindrance to his movement, GGG WILL cut off the ring and he WILL be able to land some serious dangerous shots once he gets Canelo in his crosshairs. This fight has had so many hurdles it had to get passed to make happen and now that it is officially happening it should live up to its hype. These two fighters have bad blood due to the recent controversy and accusations over the last few months and we should expect to see adjustments on both sides which should make this a great rematch! Quick Boxing Updates- • Deontay Wilder has accepted Anthony Joshua?s terms for a fight that would take place in the UK with a rematch clause in which the rematch would take place in the US. No contract has been signed by Joshua as of yet. • Mikey Garcia looks to unify the 135-pound division against Robert Easter Jr on July 28th. Mikey Garcia should expose Robert Easter Jr. • Crawford took the welterweight crown from Horn via TKO, making his presence known in the welterweight division. Errol Spence Jr. commented in regards to a potential fight between him and Crawford stating that he (Spence) is the bigger stronger fighter, has a better chin(than Crawford) and that he would just ?beat him (Crawford) up?. • Wilder took to Instagram live stating that after he beats Anthony Joshua and unifies the heavyweight division he will be the first heavyweight to move down in weight and take over the cruiserweight division.
