MAURICIO SULAIMAN BELIEVES PACQUIAO WILL BE WBC CHAMPION
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 12 Nov 2007
WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman believes that Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao will realize the importance of a world championship belt very soon.
Mauricio was echoing the views of his father, WBC president Jose Sulaiman who is in Manila for the annual convention of the premier world boxing organization which opens today at the historic Manila Hotel with President Gloria Macapagal as guest of honor.
Mauricio Sulaiman spoke to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today at a dinner tendered in honor of Don Jose and the WBC officials by the wife of the late world junior lightweight champion Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde, Laura Elorde and family at the Elorde Sports Center Saturday evening.
Sulaiman said ?I am sure the WBC belt is important to him (Pacquiao). He will realize the importance and I?m sure he?ll be the WBC champion very soon.?
The WBC official praised Pacquiao as ?a great fighter but as my father saidm without the championship belt in ten or fifteen years nobody will see in the record books the name of Manny Pacquiao. People will remember what is written in the history of boxing and Manny can write with bold letters in the super featherweight division and lightweight division as well.?
Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain said Don Jose Sulaiman was ?very touched when he saw the WBC belt and the awards while seeing the effect of ?Flash? Elorde on the Filipino people and also the world.?
Buhain said he expects Don Jose to discuss with Pacquiao the question of fighting for the WBC belt when he meets him today at the opening of the convention.
