FILIPINO Roberto Suelo Jr. trounced Singaporean Aldrin Wong in the sixth and final round to rule the recent Asean Chess Academy Rapid Open Chess Championships dubbed as Labor Day Tournament last Tuesday, May 1, 2018, was held at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre in Singapore.
The 1996 Philippine Junior champion Suelo collected 5.5 points on five wins and a draw to win the six-round tournament.
Actually, Filipino International Master candidate Edgar Reggie Olay from Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, winner over Singaporean Richard Lean in the final canto, also tallied 5.5 points, however Suelo took first place by virtue of superior tiebreak points. Suelo and Olay ended their game into a fighting draw in Round 2.
Suelo currently works at chess teacher in Singapore. Born and raised in Quezon City, Suelo is best remembered who helped the Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong woodpushers to steered the national championships title during the national inter-collegiate in the mid 90's.
Two players -- Fide Master Susilodinata Andrean of Indonesia and Joseph Navarro of the Philippines? shared third to fourth places with 4.0 points.
Meanwhile, Arena Fide Master Ravind Ricnesh of Singapore pocketed the top honors in the Challengers section with undefeated record 5.5 points in six outings.
Both Suelo and Ricnesh, are active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in Singapore.
