KRIS GEORGE READY FOR BRITAIN'S BEST PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Apr 2018 COMETH THE HOUR COMETH THE MAN - Opportunity makes the man. This is a proverb befitting of Kris George's career to date. However the next chapter or the 'next hour' looms as the silencer's greatest challenge...but if you look at it the way Kris George does - it's his 'greatest opportunity'. The reigning Commonwealth Champion puts his belt on the line against British superstar on the rise Josh Kelly who in turn will put his WBA International title on the line on June 16 at Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle, England on Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing promotion. "Cometh the hour cometh the man- this is my time," Kris George said. "I'm under no illusions this is a significant challenge but again the way I look at it - it's a significant opportunity. "I'm well aware of the wraps on Josh Kelly and I say keep talking him up - that suits me fine. "I love being the under dog, the bigger under dog the better. "I'm confident I will rise to the occasion, every fight at this level is make or break. "I'm chasing a World title, Josh Kelly is a significant step in that direction. "If I can beat him I pick up his WBA regional title and I progress up the rankings. "Josh Kelly is a great young fighter, he's doing amazing things in the sport and he has all of Britain behind him - all the pressure is on him. "People say this is my greatest challenge and the biggest fight of my career and I don't dispute that but what I would also say is - you can make the same statement about Josh Kelly. "I truly believe I am the biggest fight of his career as well and the toughest opponent he has faced." Josh Kelly is arguably Britains number one young prospect. He's 6-0 with 4 KO's and has taken huge strides forward in his short pro career to date. In his most recent bout he defeated seasoned former IBF World Champion Carlos Molina by unanimous decision to claim the WBA International belt. He's a former Olympian and in the stable of British powerhouse promoter Eddie Hearn from Matchroom boxing. "As a coach I've been fortunate enough to work with some great fighters over the years but Josh is a special talent, he really is," Kelly's trainer Adam Booth said at the official press conference. "The Commonwealth title is the next step of his career. "All we can do is keep making these steps, we will take these calculated risks because we believe in the fighter we have. "When we talk about Josh we only talk about World Championships and this is part of that journey." This scenario isn't foreign to Kris George. He's no stranger to taking on undefeated fighters, he's no stranger to being the underdog and he's no stranger to taking on fighters in their back yard. In fact his record would show he rises to the occasion. In the sixth fight of his career he met underfeated hot prospect Ozan Craddock for the Queensland title, Craddock was heavily favoured to win - George stopped him with a stunning knock out in round three. In fight twelve he travelled to New Zealand to face undefeated Kiwi prospect Bowyn Morgan - again Morgan was heavily favoured to win however he suffered a similar fate to Craddock - knocked out in round two. It's a similar story against undefeated former Olympian Cameron Hammond for the Commonwealth title - as the underdog Kris did what many said he couldn't - he outboxed Hammond to win a wide decision. In his first title defence he travelled to Sydney to face Jack Brubaker - again as the underdog George came up trumps with a round six TKO victory. June 16 at Newcastle again its an opportunity for Kris George - 'Cometh the hour cometh the man.' "I always rise to the occasion when it comes to the big fights," George said. "It's these kid of fights that motivate me. "The bigger the challenge the better I perform - my record would prove that. "It's about self belief and putting in the work. "I know what I've got to do, I understand what's in front of me. "When we walk across the ring and meet eye ball to eye ball I'll be ready. "He can have the crowd behind him, the country behind him he can have every expert tipping him to win but none of that is going to matter when the bell rings. "Cometh the hour cometh the man - the best man will win." |
