NBA -- T-Wolves squeak past Knicks, 108-104
By Oliver Iglesias PhilBoxing.com Tue, 27 Mar 2018
NEW YORK ? All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns scored 24 points and collared 13 rebounds to power the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves past the New York Knicks 108-104 on Friday night at the Madison Square Garden.
Five other Wolves finished in double figures. Power forward Taj Gibson waxed hot with 18 points and 7 rebounds, Nemanja Bjelica and Andrew Wiggins added 17 points apiece, Jamal Crawford had 13 points and 3 assists, and guard Jeff Teague produced 10 points and a team-high 8 assists.
Minnesota?s new 42-31 win-loss slate is tantamount to its first winning record in 13 years. Still fighting for a playoff slot, the Timberwolves hope to end the league?s longest postseason drought. This is the scenario ? albeit the fact that its star small forward Jimmy Butler is still recuperating from a meniscus surgery and recently-acquired guard Derrick Rose has a sprained right ankle and did not travel with the team.
Minnesota led by nine at halftime 57-48 but the Knicks charged back in the third frame to cut the lead to two, 84-82. Towns made one of 2 free throws with 20.1 seconds left before Teague added 2 more several seconds later to make it 108-101. Knicks guard Trey Burke made a 26-foot three-point dagger for the final score.
New York was led by Tim Hardaway Jr?s 39 points and center Enes Kanter had 11 points and 15 rebounds.
With its loss, the Knicks are relegated to 11th place in the East with a 26-47 record. Now at 7th,Minnesota is now just a game behind 5th placer New Orleans Pelicans in the West ? with still 9 games remaining for the regular season.
The Timberwolves went 35-for-75 for a 46.7% field goal conversion while New York had 40-for-92 for 43.5% clip.
The Knicks travel to Washington DC to meet Bradley Beal and the Wizards this Sunday, March 25.
