NIETES VALIDATES HIS PLACE AMONGST THE GREATEST FLYWEIGHTS

PhilBoxing.com

Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes, true to his word showed how the snake strikes. And strike he did!

Tonight, at the cavernous Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, Nietes displayed his brilliant technical skills and artistry in boxing that made him the longest continuous boxing world champion from the Philippines.

Nietes defended his IBF Flyweight title against a strong challenge from Argentina?s Juan Carlos Reveco. Reveco is no push over. He is a former world champion with a highly respectable record. The smooth and extremely technical manner Nietes disposed of him is a glaring tribute to the world-class talent of the native of Murcia, Negros Occidental.

This is what purist in the sweet science meant when they say ?this is boxing at it?s best!? The fight may have been devoid of blood and gore but it was a display of artistry in motion?from the offense to the defense.

The Nietes victory also sent a gigantic message to everyone at the 112 lbs division and perhaps even those at 115 lbs. It was as though Nietes said - watch out fellows, the snake is on the prowl and he is hunting you guys down.

Admittedly, the fight was not that easy. Reveco had his moments, albeit far and in between. It was his very aggressive style that played perfectly to the awesome counter-punching prowess of Nietes. Every time the Argentinian shoots his left hand, the Snake like the deadly cobra throws a counter and that eventually spelled doom for Reveco. The Filipino boxing icon almost always had a reply for every thing fired by Reveco and piled up points forcing Reveco to change tactics to catch up to no avail.

In the 6th round, Nietes landed a cool shot that buckled the legs of Reveco and the corner felt at that time, the time is up for Reveco. They instructed Nietes to pour it on and finish the job.

When the 7th round bell sounded, Nietes following instructions, went for the kill, much like a snake who had his foe against a rock. Nietes did not waste time and landed several hard shots that finally dropped Reveco.

Reveco got up, but to avoid further punishment, his corner stopped the fight and it was over!!
