Roel Abelgas leads Dasmari?as win over San Beda

PhilBoxing.com

LIKE wine, Roel Abelgas gets better with age.

Relying on his experience and mastery of the fast game, the 37-year-old sports consultant and head coach of the Dasmari?as Chess Academy lift his team into a victory with a masterful 4-0 conquest over reigning NCAA Chess Champions San Beda Red Lions on Sunday in the Blitz Battle Royale between the City of Dasmari?as and San Beda, broadcasted live worldwide through the Youtube channel of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

According to tournament organizer Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) founding president Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe, FM Abelgas went inside the battle arena after one of Dasmari?as' child prodigies - 12-year old FIDE Master-elect Michael Concio, Jr. - lost to Prince Mark Aquino of San Beda.
FM Abelgas proceeded to beat, in succession, Prince Mark Aquino, the 2015 National Junior Champion NM Marc Christian Nazario, Kevin Arquero and FM Mari Joseph Logizesthai Turqueza in an awesome display of speed and accuracy.

"FIDE Master Roel Abelgas showed why his students at the Dasmari?as Chess Academy are excelling in the international stage. In addition to their raw talent, the Dasmari?as prodigies are blessed to have a very strong coach in FM Abelgas. He already showed his strength in December by topping the very strong rapid tournament in Angadanan, Isabela, ahead of seasoned grandmasters Joey Antonio and Darwin Laylo," said Atty. Orbe, treasurer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

"He was enjoying substantial time advantage in all his games as his opponents would invariably get into time trouble with less than 20 seconds left to play while he would still have more than 2 minutes left in the endgame. One by one the Red Lions fell, and not even their anchor player could survive Abelgas' onslaught," he added.

"If the future of Philippine Chess is bright because of the Dasmari?as chess prodigies, a big amount of the credit should go to their coach. Congratulations City of Dasmari?as! Special thanks also to Dasmarinas Mayor (Elpidio) Pidi Barzaga who came to the venue to personally support his players. He even brought fried chicken and pizza for everyone! (Yes the players took a break from eating KFC). Mayor Barzaga's passion for chess is evident, and his passion is the impetus behind the City of Dasmarinas' success in chess. Mabuhay po kayo Mayor Pidi Barzaga."

"You can watch the replay of the match between the City of Dasmarinas and San Beda thru the link below. I have learned a lot watching FM Abelgas handle different openings in this match. You can also learn from his expert handling of the Caro-Kann, the Queen's Gambit and his other pet openings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JwmgNqYRIk&t=11501s ." last word of Atty. Orbe.
