The Donaire Title Defense? Why at Foxwood?

PhilBoxing.com

The first title defense of the ?Filipino Flash?, Nonito Donaire, Jr as announced from New York, will be held at the Foxwood Resort and Casino in the State of Connecticut.

The fight will be the main undercard of a triple world championship card featuring among others, Antonio Tarver vs. Vernon Forrest. Gary Shaw is the promoter and the card will be shown live on ShowTime Championship Boxing, Saturday, December 1, 2007

Many ask: why at Foxwood? Where is Foxwood and what is so interesting at Foxwood? Why not Vegas or LA or even the Madison Square Garden in New York where there is always a huge potential audience?

Well, trust Gary Shaw and the head honchos from ShowTime! Aside from the aforementioned sites, they know where a promotion is bound to make money. Thus, they picked Foxwood.

The Foxwood Hotel & Casino.

For the Filipino boxing fans and others not familiar with the place, here are some interesting features of Foxwood Resort and Casino.

Foxwood is north America?s largest Casino Resort. It is located in the rolling hills of southeastern Connecticut in a town called Ledyard. It is easily accessible from Boston (1 hour 45 minutes drive), New York City (2 hours 30 minutes) and Providence, Rhode Island (45 minutes). Its not too far either from major Canadian cities in the eastern seaboard.

Foxwood is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and it is located in their tribal land. It started as a bingo hall and expanded to what it is today.

The property features six casinos with more than 7200 slot machines and 380 gaming tables. It also has high stakes bingo and a Race Book.

There are 1416 guest rooms and suites in three hotels and more than 30 restaurants. There is a luxurious spa for guests to unwind and have a massage and more than 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space, 24 retail shops, 30 restaurants and 5 entertainment venues including a 1400 seat theater.

Golfers can play at two 18 hole championship courses designed by Rees Jones.

More than 40,000 visit the resort everyday. It is therefore no small wonder why Gary Shaw and ShowTime picked the place. Foxwood is a people magnet.

The location of Donaire?s first title defense may not be that bad after all. So far he has been lucky in the State of Connecticut. It was there that he won his title when he knocked out the wily Australian, Vic Darchinyan. to grab his dual world titles earlier this year. A repeat victory albeit with another foe, will not be that far-fetched.
