Is Vasyl ?High Tech? Lomachenko ?The One? or Will Guillermo Rigondeaux Cause a Glitch in the Matrix? By Carmelo Maisonet PhilBoxing.com Sat, 02 Dec 2017 ![]() On December 9th we will be bestowed with a magnificent showdown between two high level technicians. Cuba?s very own Guillermo ?El Chacal? Rigondeaux (18-0-1, 11KO?s) and Ukraine?s Vasyl ?Hi-Tech? Lomachenko (9-1, 7KO?s) will have a chess match in the squared circle. If boxing is one man?s trade versus another man?s trade then this fight pits two southpaws, master craftsmen against each other! Both these fighters have extensive amateur records with Lomachenko amassing 396 wins with one loss while Rigondeaux amassed 475 wins with 12 losses. Both these fighters have won Olympic gold not once but twice. Lomachenko also known as ?Hi-Tech? and ?The Matrix? has wowed boxing fans with his flashy footwork alongside a high punch output that is always executed with surgical precision. He is a rare breed of a defensive fighter. Defensive fighters tend to be more cautious, take less chances and stalk for openings. Lomachenko is a defensive southpaw, with the highest punch volume this writer has ever seen. He rarely gets touched yet still comes forward putting pressure. He is a slick, defensive pressure fighter and what he may lack in punching power he gains in evasive defense and punch output which tends to be too much for his opponents. His last 6 fights either ended in KO or a fighter being retired in the corner. These stoppages weren?t from just one or two hard shots but a plethora of punches which picked away until there was nothing left. Rigondeaux, another southpaw with impeccable footwork also is untouchable. Freddie Roach was quoted as saying Rigondeaux is ?probably the greatest talent I?ve ever seen?. The Ring, The Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and BoxRec have Rigondeaux ranked has ?The world?s best active super bantamweight?. Among these achievements and great skillset, he has still been considered a ?boring fighter? due to a lower punch output. Still overall, he has a vicious left, with high level ring IQ, a true boxing genius. There is some bad blood between these two, who have taken part in a war of words online calling each other. It is personal and Rigondeaux aims to prove he deserves to be at the top. This writer feels that this will push Rigondeaux out of his comfort zone and we will see a new, more aggressive Rigondeaux. The age and size advantage go to Lomachenko. Lomachenko is 29 while Rigondeaux is 37. Rigondeaux also has to move up in weight from super bantamweight (122 Lbs.) to meet Vasyl Lomachenko who is the WBO junior lightweight champion (130 Lbs.) Rigondeaux must really come out of his shell, put pressure and up the activity level in the ring if he wants to find a ?glitch in the matrix.? This writer sees this fight going in favor of Lomachenko. Their evasive skills are very similar but Lomachenko will dictate the pace with higher punch volumes. A knockout would not be easy for either fighter, but it would not be a surprise if emotions get involved making it a highly aggressive fight.
